Garmin makes a really good one. I just bought a duel camera the other day. Cobra 895 stuck it in the new 3500 Dodge. Has the rear facing camera you mount on the back window.

For single camera the Garmin will work well.

I bought a Magellan MiVue 658 last year and I have been really happy with it. I upgraded to a 128gb micro SD card so I can store a lot of data before it starts writing over the data captured. Their included app is pretty nice and you can review or download your data to the computer, take snap shots, and interface with Google Maps to see your location.

The reviews have a wide range--either good or bad with little middle ground.

Reviews say 20 minutes unless you buy more memory.

I'm looking for a good camera system for a highlander. Need to check I if Toyota has one.

All you have to do is turn it off. Once you unplug it or take the power cord out the unit it stops recordling All of them are on rewrite. If you don't cut them off they keep running when they run out of MB they start over. I run a 32G in all of mine. This cobra will allow you to run to the 36

Dash cams have a sensor that will detect a sudden change in movement. When triggered it will save the file. There is also a button that you can push to save the loop.

What is a loop you ask? Dash cams record in loops then overwright the oldest loop when the card runs out of space. You are not recording one long movie. You are recording small loops. I have mine set to loop every 5 min. When you push the save button or it detects sudden motion and auto saves a loop the good dash cams will save the loop before as well. That way if you have an incident that was captured at the end of one loop and the start of the next you will have the data.

As for which one to get. My advice would be to spend at least $100 on one and buy one that has been around for a while, not the newest model. The issue I have had with dash cams is the battery. Most of them are soldered to the internal components and can not be swapped out. They don't hold a lot of charge but are needed to gracefully power down the camera when the car is turned off. As you can imagine the inside of a car is a pretty rough place to live. In NC the inside of my truck is currently 16 and during the summer when parked in the sun can hit 110+. Once the battery dies every time you shut off your car and the camera loses power it will corrupt a file that can't be rotated out. The card will fill up and you will have to format it every day or so depend on card size. This is why I say get an older one. That way you know if it's prone to battery failure or not.

"Most" decent dash cams will:

Loop so it will keep recording over any existing info once it reaches capacity.
Allow you to save a clip by pushing a button.
Have some kind of g-sensor to auto save. It assumes you had a crash and saves it in case you are not able to.
Auto-turn on with the g-sensor, so if your car is parked and hit it will start recording.
Allow you to set the recording quality (size and possibly frames per second) to customize how much you can fit on the SD card.
Allow you to overlay speed on the recording

The more expensive cameras include features like GPS, dual cameras (front/****** better viewing angles, WifFi and Bluetooth so you can get the videos off easier than removing the SD card each time, and so on.

If you want to play with one for free to get an idea what they do and have a smartphone, look in the app store. There are a few free ones. You can get an idea for the features. I use this - cost $10. But it isn't car mounted. http://osmand.net/dvr

I really like my Cobra dash cam. I looked at a bunch online then came across a Cobra display at a Barrett-Jackson action and after looking at the Cobras in person, I decided to buy one. I think they are about as refined as you'll get (I'd bet the Garmin ones are pretty good too).

I have the 855BT

The duel might be more than needed but the Cobra has most of the high end features including displaying your speed if you want it to with a additional GPS . Its all I need. Rear view camera was just a bonus.

Play and play. You can get the front unit only if your not wanting the rear camera. I just got a heck of a deal on it is why I bought the one with the rear view. Stereo shop had not sold it offered it to me at cost.

Forward camera only. > eBay item number:162334618237
.
