Default Help me work through a problem that is getting worse.

... it appears to be really common, but now it I think I have a legitimate mental problem (not kidding) and it is to the point where my reaction is not warranted.

I'm talking about people who make a ton of noise when they eat. I can't handle it. I literally want to take the food and ram it down their throat. I can't stand it. The worse part is I'm deaf in one ear, so you would think that I wouldn't hear it that bad - but I do, and it's torture.

Anything? And no, I'm not going to have a drink or calm down Nancy. LOL. I just can't stand it.

Once you start hearing it, you start dwelling on it only making it worse.

Is this with family? Out in public?

What about ear buds to listen to calming music, natural outdoor sounds (birds, oceans surf, wind through the trees) at a low volume so you can still hear if someone is talking to you.
Take your mind to a better place.

YOU do have the power to control YOUR reactions to others.

Move away from them.

I can handle it when I hear it in public... it's still makes my stomach turn, but I can deal with it.
The biggest problem is with family. My children NEVER made mouth noises, but apparently they heard their grandfather (wife's father) eating (nice guy, but holy shit - you don't want to see or hear him eat. When he makes his toast in the morning... (WARNING: GRAPHIC!)... he takes the butter knife, spreads the butter, then takes the entire knife, puts it in his mouth to "clean" it and then shoves it in the jelly jar, takes the jelly, and spreads. Love the guy, but for the love of God - teach yourself some f-ing manners.

I don't care if he does what he doesn't but I'll be damned if my kids are going to sound like pigs when they eat.

Note: They NEVER do it unless we're eating at home. So they know full well they can control it.

Let's say I'm standing behind you (in other words you can't see me) and I'm eating chips with my mouth closed of course, but there's that initial *crunch* that happens as one closes their mouth. Does this bother you?

If it doesn't, could it be more of a visual thing watching someone eat?

I once told a family member, the only difference between you and a Komodo Dragon when it eats is that the Komodo Dragen has fresher breath.

I agree with you, it's incredibly irritating/disgusting listening to someone suck in food while sounding like combination of garbage disposal with a bad bearing and a fucking flushing toilet.

I was at a Chinese Fast Food joint a while back. Some mofo was eating the slop making a quadraphonic racket that was a combination of slurping & moaning. I swear to Christ it could have been the sound track from a tubby time porno orgy movie. If I could have hit him in the head with a 2x4 and not gone to jail for it, I would have......

I have the same problem.

When around the table in the home, I can hear people chew food, swallow, etc. and yeah, I can't stand it.

It's not chewing with mouths open or slurping or anything but can hear it.

I've just done my best to not let it bother me and power through. As 240 said "YOU do have the power to control YOUR reactions to others."

Don't travel to Asia or eat with Asians, that would kill you.

try putting on some soothing music while you eat doesn't have to be loud just high enough so you don't always focus on that which annoys you. May or may not take the edge off but who knows it might even encourage the loud ones to eat quieter so they too can here the music

Positive Psychology News Daily recently featured a piece about “Music and Song: The Sounds of Hope.” They report a number of research findings about the immediate psychological and medical benefits of music: increased happiness, less stress, reduced depression symptoms, greater autonomy, and increased competence, hope, and optimism. Research shows that children who are involved with music programs grow up to have lower rates of addictive behaviors, better academic performance, and greater preparedness for college and the work force.

Your problem is you have a hearing impairment, therefore you are far more aware of the sounds you do hear.

I've always said those that eat like a cow should be out in the barn with the rest of the animals. Manners is what is taught in the home.
