Well sure enough, after I fixed the one issue with a 3rd party, the mail delivery service seems to be choking on sending.

So I have set it up with another one today. Since I imported the list, it has to be manually reviewed by the provider. Once that happens I will send it, and then I will switch it back to sending at early AM again.

If you want to get a preview of the email with the deals you can see it online here: http://clt.bmeurl.co/6B35DE3

cool. are there websites that provide similar services agnostic of the actual retailer? i know of camelcamelcamel for amazon...

on a related note, do folks setup hobby businesses with friends to get westmarine pro (formerly port supply): https://www.westmarinepro.com/partne...mo-_-PRO-_-N/A ?

i did that many years ago and it used to offer substantial savings but i've seen the price discounts reduced (perhaps because we spend less than $10k/year). in any event, i dont think it discounts sale prices so may not be applicable for items this service finds.

I got that in one email, and the other was fine. I'm watching it, to make sure it works properly.

Most likely I will be building an email delivery system from scratch at some point. These bugs are ridiculous considering this should be quite simple for them to handle. But mostly because, I want to make it so the notifications are near instant (or daily if that is subscriber preference) plus product preference based (Ex: subscriber can choose to only see items greater than X% discount, or only in certain categories.)

Thanks for the feedback and patience.

I wouldn't recreate the wheel on this one-- Sendy is rock solid and has a mature API. It would take months if not a couple of years to develop something as robust on your own.
https://sendy.co/api

Five suggestions, primarily because I see you struggling with bugs and because you said you're not a programmer by trade. I'm always hesitant offering suggestions via a web based forum when not asked as they come off as dick-ish, but please don't take them that way as that's not my intent. If you need further clarification, I'd be glad to get on a Google hangout or Skype and walk you through example code for a half hour or so.

SOLID
If you aren't familiar with SOLID design principles, do some reading. People who learn to program in PHP tend to violate all of these, but for now focus on the S. Do you have php files which are responsible for querying the database, enforcing business rules, and displaying output all in one file or do you properly separate those concerns?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOLID_...riented_design)

Dependency Injection
Are you using dependency injection? This is the "D" in solid. If not, seriously take a look at it. The idea is that your software is dependent upon interfaces rather than concrete implementations. In your use case, the benefit would be that you could go live with code which uses xyz mailer, and then if that fails, you can flip a setting to Sendy without modifying code. Your app will never know about the concrete implementations of the "SendMyNewsletter" class, so switching between providers requires very minimal effort, plus you can unit test (my second suggestion).
http://php-di.org/doc/understanding-di.html

Unit/Integration Testing
Are you unit testing? While most people think of unit testing as something that helps prevent bugs, it actually helps you exercise your code. As an example, if a user requests a list of subscribers and is only getting back half the list, you can write a unit test of that GET method to the function directly rather than uploading your files, logging in, recreating the steps, then testing for each bug.
https://phpunit.de/

As for integration testing, you can save a lot of headache by using freeware such as Jenkins to deploy your code to a test environment and execute it as often as you desire. For something like the bug I saw today, it would have caught that before the email went out. The beauty of integration tests are that you code them once, then when you deploy code to production you don't have to run through every single test case by hand.

Source Control
No matter how small the project, ALWAYS use a source control program. Git is the most common non proprietary option. This allows you to branch off each time you add a feature, and merge that branch into your primary code repo when you're done. You can also make each deployment a version branch, so if new bugs pop up you know exactly which lines of code may or may not have caused it. Here's a good intro
https://www.atlassian.com/git/tutori...ersion-control

IDE
If you're not using an IDE with a step through code debugger, use one. Visual studio is IMO the best out there, and has a PHP extension. The documentation here is fairly self explainatory, watch the videos and read it.

Again, just trying to help!

Not taken that way at all - no worries.

I agree this has been buggy, but I think it's because I'm pushing the limits of the 3rd parties I tried to use to make it quicker to get a proof of concept going. It bit me in the butt.

Ultimately I plan to give it to one of my programmers to get it done right.
I'll PM you so we can discuss more and won't glaze over everyones eyes with tech stuff. :P

Most of the ones I know of require you to select a specific product to track vs tracking categories or product types for deals. Pros and cons to each method. The need I'm trying to fill is for more category type of purchases, where a specific product isn't a requirement.

So, for example if you want to watch for a specific chart plotter this wouldn't be the right method to monitor that price, but if you wanted to watch for a great deal on a chart plotter that hits closeout and are flexible on the actual product, then this could be helpful. Same with wanting some T-Shirts at a great deal, like these Yeti ones for $5.55: http://www.westmarine.com/outlet/buy...M&recordNum=95
http://www.westmarine.com/outlet/buy...0?recordNum=96

I see it kind of like getting a notice from the store when they drop stuff into the clearance bins so you know there's fresh stuff to check out and see if anything is interesting.

Should be interesting to see how this works out. I'm sure my wife is going to shoot me if I keep buying boat shit though.
