Default Out of spec rifle.

<rant>
I am a Six Sigma guy so I get it when product defect occurs I just hate being one of the 3.5 people out of a milion that gets the defect. I was going to build up a 800 yard rifle but one day at the local gun shop I saw a Mossberg MVP-LC and on a whim bought it figuring it was already built for me.

The first time I took it to the range it was all over the place and the trigger was terrible. I get the thing home to find out no bolts were torqued, so out comes the inch pound wrench and loctite. Next range session more of the same. Figured it was crappy ammo (it was some no name 308, i was just trying to get some rounds through the barrel as I was entertaining guests).

Today's range session I shot Federal Gold Metal Match and Federal Premium Vital Shok Best I could get was 5-6 inch groups and changing from 165 to 150 I had about a 6" drop. I figured for the hell of it I would swap scopes. Same thing. The scope I knew was dead on I put on the MVP and it was all over the place still. The scope from the MVP went on to my TC Venture and was shooting 1.5" groups.

Well Monday morning I will be at UPS sending it back to them. Clearly the barrel is out of spec.

Cleary DPMO's are your enemy.

Building will be more fun.

Good luck

At what yardage were you shooting? I know you mentioned you were looking for and 800 yard gun.

Today I was at 100 with the crono to baseline factory loads through the rifle.

Any pattern to the discrepancies? vertical stringing? What was the ES and AV, since you stated you were checking velocities?

That sucks. I have mossbergs MMR "hunter", basically an AR in .223. I put a vortex scope on it and it's pretty much dead accurate at 100 yards. Hopefully it will all turn out good.

You were 6" @ a 100 yds! Hell, I can do better than that with my 380 LCP.

Anyway, sounds like that rifle has bigger problems than can be addressed in the field.

How much coffee did you consume before and during the range time?

No offense but I would never consider Mossberg and great accuracy in the same thought

Their shotguns have ALWAYS been POS's with CHEAP ASS barrels, would not expect anything more from a rifle they made

Heck didn't even know they made rifles

Today I bought a howa 1500 barreled action from Brownells. $475 and they have a $50 off coupon and free shipping deal going right now if you spend over $500. I added some dies and other stuff I would need.

Its 24" heavy barrel chambered in 6.5 creedmoor. I will be putting it on a bell and carlson stock ($280)

Not sure what you spent on the mossberg but I expect to be well under 1 MOA with this $700 setup and factory match grade ammo. Of course I will be reloading and with some work I can hopefully do better than that. I think I can reasonably expect to be 1/2 MOA or better.

Is your scope loose or possibly broken? That's about the only way I could see shooting those type of groups unless you were just standing and not shooting off a bench.

If the above issues aren't the problem I would get a new rifle.

No. It's the rifle. Something is out of spec. Bipod and sand bag then the led sled. I even swapped scopes and still had the same issue.

See post #6

Also, can you post a pic of some of the groups?

Federal American Eagle .308 150
ES-45fps
AV-2740

Federal premium .308 165
ES-16fps
AV-2632

The federal 165 was the one shooting about 6" lower. I tried both ammo in another rifle and there was no drop at 100 yards.
