I wouldn't know where to begin, but I'm sure it will end in glory

Sneaky Snooker 12-01-2016 03:22 AM

Caspian frame ?

Tommysmicroskiff 12-01-2016 06:59 AM

Palmetto State Forged stainless

Getting pretty standard stuff 3.5 Target trigger ,extended mag release , the rest standard GI For now it will run a 460 Rowland Carbine upper with a Holo sight ... Small mag capacity is an issue though ...

Ooh! This'll be fun.

Erobinson1 12-01-2016 01:23 PM

dont waste the effort and money on GI parts. Go ahead and do the beavertail and whatever thumb safety you prefer. Gonna end up doing them anyway. Gonna leave it white or put a finish on it?

Same here! I had to go to the store in Bluffton yesterday to get the slide.

Sorry for the dumb question guys, but are these like an AR build where you basically are just assembling the weapon or is there a degree of machining and or metal work that needs to be done to finish these 1911s?

If one can build an AR without too much trouble, would this be in the same ballpark?

Thanks

You can assemble the parts, but they ALWAYS need some fit and finish work. Yes, it's like an AR, but everything is 4x the price. 1911s are EXPENSIVE!!!

If you would like to learn the history of custom 1911s, it surprisingly does NOT start with Saint John Moses Browning. Move forward a couple of decades to a brilliant adventurist in Kalifornika called Armand Swenson. In addition to being the first gunsmith to customize 1911s, he was also involved in racing speed boats. Yeah, he would have fit in well right here on THT.

Working on 1911s is at least as much art as it is science. For example, in the vast world of 1911s, rattle = reliable.

Though Armand has passed, his nephew John Jardine is keeping Armand's spirit alive. And he's still working in kalifornika. Many others are keeping Armand's spirit alive, too.

If you really wanna learn the magic of 1911s, take this course:

Looks good. Is this an 80% frame?
I have just purchased an 80% frame & the stealth arms jig. Waiting for everything to get here so I can start on it.

And that's a good thing ;-)

Tommysmicroskiff 12-02-2016 08:01 PM

No it is a 100 % frame :-) I send a text to my FFL

He texts me back when it comes in I stop by ...totally painless 5 minute process :-)

a LOT easier than trying to F around and circumvent the law
my freedom is worth a LOT more to me than to get busted with an ILLEGAL firearm If I want to do BATF paperwork it will be for an SBR or suppressor ;-)

Since a barrel and slide was going to be $750 :o

I'm just going to install it on a 460 Rowland CCU ...

RipTideBBQ 12-03-2016 05:14 AM

Slide was $130. I picked up two because my coworker is building one also. I'm most likely going to put in a Wilson Combat drop in barrel, $190 when not on sale. I've also heard that the PSA 5" 1911 barrels are made by Wilson. I'm going to research this and if that's the case, I will pick one of those up for under $100. This is going to be a long project using the best parts I can buy when they are on sale. If it takes me a year, so be it.

Tommysmicroskiff 12-03-2016 06:56 AM

Good stuff :-) ... Since I have to have a heat treated slide and want stainless the Caspian is the one I needed

And the 460 Rowland "Kit" is right up there

Below are the technical reasons

There are two key elements to the .460 Rowland concept. The first is a sharp increase in cartridge maximum pressure over the .45 ACP and .45 Super. Maximum Average Pressure is: 45 ACP (21,000 PSI), .45 ACP +P (23,000 PSI), .45 Super (28,000 PSI), .460 Rowland (40,000 PSI).
