Really find the millions they talk about tough to buy into. Yes it's expensive, but come on 7mill for thanksgiving protection? How much of this is sunk costs, it's not like the secret service were not on the payroll prior, or the vehicles did not exist. Yes there is incremental cost, but this all seems a bit misleading

The $2.3 million per day - $900 million per year it is budgeted at is very misleading in that it includes about 1,000 full time secret service agents that protect the president, vice president, former presidents, presidential families, and have to do the pre-trip security work.
It is a huge job - but as a country we don't really have a choice.
In Trump's case, as pointed out, the costs will be greater because: he has a larger family than any president in the last 100 years; has two very large personal residences; and as has been true since Reagan, the job entails more frequent travel than it did in the mid-20th century.

Regardless of the expense, if it's needed, do it. The president and his family need and deserve the best protection possible. I'll be interested to see if all the same characters on here that bitched about the costs associated with the current president will complain about the new president's expenses.

I find it funny how SUDDENLY this is not an issue (it never was as far as I'm concerned). I can remember people complaining about a certain presidents mother in law staying in the White House and the costs associated with that though.

Needs to be done but yeah, I noticed that too. Not surprising.

If any previous prez or first family decided they were gonna live also in Chicago, for example, everyone would be screaming and name calling.

We are a messed-up country imo.

At in-laws for turkey day. They are all opposite party affiliation as myself. Never heard a word about costs associated with security, vacations, anything to do with current people, but whining about how bad this security cost thing is. Always a double standard.

Whether I agree with the president that's in office or not, It's vitally important to our national security, stability and "Image" to make sure our president is safe. I think everyone is a bit biased, I've been known to grumble a bit about golfing and Hawaiian vacations but don't care that Barron will be finishing up his school year in NYC before him and mom move into the White House. The millions of dollars sound like a lot until you look at what the federal government spends on many other things.

I agree 1000%, I'm just pointing out hypocrisy when I see it.

Even if it does cost that much, it is probably cheaper than dealing with the results of a Presidential assassination.

Security for president is not a choice that is made by that individual so it is not his fault he has a family and that there could be attempts on his life. People are actively ambushing LEOs now and there are protests against president elect. How would it look if he was killed by some gangbanger with a Saturday night special.

Strange this comes up now.

The budget for the entire USSS Prodection Division is just under a billion or $2.7 million daily.

The Obamas, Clintons, both Bushes, Carter, visiting heads of state, any cabinet member or congressman traveling abroad on official business.

The incremental costs for an administration-elect can't be THAT much.

It would normally decline in numbers covering the candidates, except that H still gets protection as the wife of an ex-president. The protective service will be getting a workout with the wife and son remaining in NY, but a lot of the outer security will be the NYPD, paid out of other funds. It can be covered by cutting out the grants for research into the mating habits of earthworms, teaching shrimp to run on treadmills, etc.

How many agents are there in an ex presidents detail? More than 1, less than a motorcade, 3 shifts with a rotating weekend schedule, a sniper on the neighbors roof?

True story: I was in a hardware store in Marco Island one Sunday a few years ago. Notice a well dressed black guy with earpiece - very out of place in Marco. Then see another guy dressed in business casual with earpiece.

We leave the store and two Suburbans pull up, 3-4 other guys get out and open the door for the protectee.

So three SUVs, at least 6 guys, who knows how much weaponry and comms equipment.

Turns out, Mrs. Boehner, wife of then-third in line to presidency Speaker John Boehner wanted to go to the store!

"Expensive" is a relative term. A billion dollars?

Lemme tell you what's expensive. Our gubbermint has a plan that they carry out when certain bad things happen to a sitting American president, like an assassination or attempt. By far the MOST expensive thing is when the US Treasury decides to buy dollars on the open market to support its value. Literally, there is no budget for this. No limited dollar amount. They can, and will, spend anything. A billion dollars? Maybe in the first minute.

It becomes this gigantic battle of the US Treasury, supported by the full faith and credit of all American taxpayers, vs the rest of the world.

For some insight into how this works, please read former Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy's book on the assassination attempt of President Reagan.

Happy Thanksgiving!
