Default Think West Marine is Expensive? What about Bass Pro Shops?

Bass Pro profit margins ‘better than Apple and Alibaba’

Profit margins at Bass Pro were better than those at Apple and Alibaba in the most recent quarter, according to a confidential presentation to lenders that was part of last month's $5.5 billion purchase of rival Cabela’s. The 50% gross margin posted by the 78-store Springfield, Missouri, chain topped Apple at 38% and Alibaba 30%.

Bass Pro Shops isn't publicly traded so I'd doubt the legitimacy of these numbers personally. Not that you'll ever find anything at BPS that's a good price. I've had a 25 dollar gift card to that place and just can't seem to spend it because I find the item cheaper on Amazon even if you include my 25 dollar gift card....

Well when I make furniture and sell it my margin is about 70% so I guess mine is better than apple too but in terms of revenue and gross profit they kick my butt. Its kind apple and oranges.

50% GM is waay high and highly unlikely for a large chain store like that.. probably closer to 40%

A good portion of their sales is hats, shirts, and other crap. Mark up on that is high. Name brand tackle and gears mark up is low.
Reason you can find gear cheaper is because online retailers aren't paying for the store. Upkeep, inventory, damage/loss, employees, etc.
I split my time between bass pro and online. Sometimes I need to see it in person first, plus returns are easier.

Nothing better than wandering around the fishing section at Bass Pro at Gillette Stadium on a cold, snowy New England day... It's like a little slice of spring.

Margin is not relevant so long as their prices to the consumer are competitive. Maybe they buy inventory at much better prices than their competition?

I use my Bass Pro bucks when they build up. Over the years I've probably gotten $2000 of free stuff.

You guys do know they match competitors including Walmart. I find the item I want and bring it to Customer Service and show them on my phone and they ALWAYS matched the price.

Anyone know when I can use my BP gift cards at Cabela's?

I thought you go to Bass Pro to walk around, get ideas, take pictures with your phone, and then look for it online at home while having an adult beverage. You mean, people actually buy stuff there too?

I'm so glad I don't have to shop at BPS. I stopped at one on the way home from a casino one time with money burning a hole in my pocket and wandered around for an hour, ended up just buying my wife a fishing shirt.

I typically just buy clothes at BassPro when they're on sale. I've been happy with their store brands.

The "name brand" fishing stuff seems to always be list price.

Bass Pro and Gander, get touchy feely with products then buy elsewhere. Full retail pricing at both.

BPS prices are rediculous but people pay them so why not.
