I'd tell him to keep it, I can get Blanton's for $50-60 a bottle here in Ct.

hmmm...not sure how far you are from Pasadena, MD, but the last couple of times that i visited my in-laws and i popped into Plaza Liquors in Lake Shore Plaza, they've had a mess of good stuff including Blanton's. Address is 4125 Mountain Rd, Pasadena, MD 21122. and, actually there's a bunch of liquor stores along Mountain Road in Pasadena that usually have really good selections, so maybe also check out 177 liquors and pasadena market wine and spirits. Christos in glen burnie, and Dawson's in Severna Park also usually stock the good stuff.

Happy Hunting!

Seems like everyone that says don't spend that has some available near them. That makes sense.

true, but I still don't think I'd ever spend 200 on Blanton's. I love the stuff, but I'll just drink something else. Like, 6 bottles of Larceny or something.

Very rarely does it show up near me, but I look for it when I'm traveling 3-4 times per year. Love it, but wouldn't pay $200 a bottle. $100 maybe, especially if he has 15 bottles (i.e. not rare).

My best friend had dinner with Jimmy at Malone's Landsdowne in Lexington 3 days ago. He also bought a few barrels for private labeling while hanging with the legend.

When you get a few, Id love to hear this process for buying your own barrels. Is it cheaper? Do you bottle them or does the distiller handle it? And any other bits of trivia youd like to share.

We have a group in Houston called the Bourbon Hounds of Houston that I co-manage with two other guys. We have done many barrel picks which we run through stores that we call "Friends of the Hounds". The owners are people that trust us to pick very good Bourbon (bourbon that sells) and who also get along with the other stores and don't mind splitting barrels. Because of the laws, we can commit to barrels but sadly we can't just back the truck up, load up and go. They have to be bottled, shipped and sold to a distributor who then will call me to find out which stores are supposed to get that particular barrel and how its supposed to be split if at all, then it get's delivered to those stores. We try to have barrels that are split released on the same day so that that there is no hurt feelings that someone got to start selling earlier than another store.

Pricing for us is usually about the same price that the stores would sell a regular shelf bottle. So for instance, if a bottle of regular Russel's Reserve shelf juice is normally $55, our private pick will be the same price. Many stores however think very highly of their picks and charge more. When I fly out to do a pick, sadly that's on my own dime...nobody covers that for me LOL. Wife is still trying to figure out how this benefits us....fly out on your own dime to pick a barrel of bourbon, eat, lodge, party etc....fly home and wait a few months to see that bottle show up and then head to the store to buy said bourbon.

We have been very lucky with our connections and have really had some amazing bourbon down here in Houston for our group. There are a couple of other groups in town that have been a bit more hit and miss, but ours have been phenomenal and sell out VERY fast....often times whole barrels are gone in a day or two. I have helped a few THT'ers get some of our stuff and they seem to really be pleased.

I am also in a private barrel group called "The Departed". There are 25 of us around the country, and everybody in the group is seriously connected some how...well except for the one in the group that's lower than well shit....which would be me. We buy barrels also but strictly for ourselves. Our last barrel, we were each able to get 5 bottles and a few guys got a 6th....and that was it. In this group we run it through one of a couple stores which are owned by guys also in the group so pricing is obviously very favorable and the picks are top top barrels.

The biggest problem is that we are in a bourbon bubble and unless you already have connections or are a bigshot, you aren't getting in at a distillery today. They don't have enough bourbon for the demand of single barrel private picks at the moment so getting in is tough. As an example, Wild Turkey has I think close to 20 Rick Houses....most hold 20,000 barrels and a couple of them hold 50,000. Wild Turkey will ONLY RELEASE 450 private single barrels in 2018...that is all that's allocated. Now, i am sure if you are an old friend of someone named Russel and are somehow connected to the bourbon world you can get a barrel when you wan it but I'm sure those favors are few and far between. But 450 barrels for the entire world....THAT'S IT?!?!?!? Houston will see about a dozen or a little more of those this year.

Hope that explains it...if it doesn't, ask away!

jay
