Default Finally had my nose surgery yesterday

I have NEVER had a sense of smell and about 33 yrs ago had my nose operated on for deviated septum. Did not help one way or another with sense of smell but Dr at that time did tell me as I got older I would have issues breathing through my nose again

Over the last 2 yrs or so it has become very aggravating, at times i breath just fine through my nose then all of a sudden it can just stop up, my Dr has suspect things like perfume, cologne etc are the cause. She recommended me to see nose dr (think they called then ENT). She told me nothing like olde surgery and done as outpatient.

Went for consult back in June and then they did a CT scan . Dr told me left side of my nose was 95% blocked and this was the cause for me getting stopped up it appears there is a lot of scaring from original surgery and trying to heal up after all the years

Well went in Monday am and back home around 12, now it is done as outpatient

Dr did tell me that I actually had a hole in my septum and it was amazing I did not have a whistling sound . He ended up putting in a silicone button as he called it and clean out all the other cartlidge and bone that was clogging my nose up. He said it was lot worse than he expected.

Instead of the splints they now use he used dissolvable packing, last time that packing removal was a BITCH.

I am on pain meds every 3 hours for what seems like an awful migraine and the surgery actually makes your front teeth very sore. . Needless to say I have to try and sleep sitting up which is not very comfortable, hence this is why i am on THT at 2 AM

Dr still not sure if I will have any type of sense of smell but he assures me after a couple weeks my breathing problems will be solved.

I guess you will see me posting a lot more than normal on THT over next few days

I need the same thing done. Probably have about 10% breathing capacity out of My left side. For about a month now, My Nose has been a little runny like the oncoming of a Cold. I do have Allergies. But the Allergy spray I use has not done crap for it. Think I need a overhaul....Nose,Knees,Neck,and more!

I had mine done about 5 years ago. I about passed out when they pulled the splints out. Didn't hurt at all, but it was an awkward feeling and when I saw how big they were, I got very dizzy.

I was going to have balloons installed to open my sinuses up some. I have constant problems with my nose. Constant allergies and sinus infections. I do have an s shaped septom also. I think I am going to reschedule soon.
Good luck and have a speedy recovery.

I had a deviated septum repaired years ago and now can't breath out of my nose either. Please give us an update on your progress. If your surgery is a success, I might try it again too.

Sure will, I can tell you this so far NOTHING like the surgery I had when I was 20 yrs old

ENT Dr said my nasal flow would have been almost nothing in the years to come

Hard to tell right now, left side of nose feels like it always does, stopped up. Right side about the same

Main thing right now is hoping to get these pain meds out of my system, best friend lost his Dad to cancer and they are receiving friends at funeral home tonight . Admiral and I took them some stuff Sunday am and he said he did not expect me to be there due to my surgery however if anyway I can make it tonight I will. Just feel little groggy from pain meds this am

I have post op check up on 10/31.

As for sense of smell I have my doubts but you never know, Dr said more than likely those nerve endings are damaged to bad and quite I honestly i have NEVER been able to smell anyting . Some what makes me nervous if I can all of a sudden smell, might not like half of what I eat if I could smell it first LOL

I hope everything works out well for you and your sense of smell is there at the end. You seem like a pretty good guy for a tater and I always enjoy reading your posts.

I hope you get at least partially back. I lost 90% of my smelling abilities about 23 years ago due to high fever/flu. ENT could never find anything. It does have a few good points though. The only way I know if the dog farts is my eyes start watering!

Good luck to ya!

I am also 95% blocked due to a broken nose. Seems like the surgery is a lot better than it used to be. My wife had it done years ago and they basically ran a 1/4" bit up her nose. Packing made her nose look like a tennis ball.

Will look into it after a get another procedure.

That's good to know. That absolutely sucked having them removed after my surgery. That was about 25 years ago though. The best thing I've ever suffered through.

30+ years ago I have a bad sinus infection, after several rounds of different meds went to an ENT Dr that shoved an endless amount of gauze soaked in some deadening med up my right nostril , pulled it back out a little later. Could not believe how much was up there.
He then grabbed the back of my head and shoved a tube way up that side on my nose, and sucked out/flushed out all kinds of stuff.I heard/felt popping/crunching as he shoved that tube in there. I still get bloody stuff out of that nostril when I get a cold some times
I was glad He did not have to do the other side too

I will keep this thread updated but today is pretty damn rough. Not normally one for pain meds but popping them all day.

I don't go back for follow up until 10/31, he wanted to leave packing in as long as possible in my case.

Right now I am glad I scheduled 2 weeks out of my office but hoping I will be up to returning on Monday
