Default TV show LOST: any expert in the house?

I just finished watching it and I'm LOST!!!

What the hell happened? can anybody explained me, if they were all dead or not?

It started to get kind of over the top on season 4 but with all the "flash backs", "flash forward" and the "flash of what could have happened" I do not understand the fricking end...

They are basically in purgatory, reliving events of their lives. They all died in the original plane crash.

Totally bizarre that John Lock was really Kate's & Sawyers dad, and that they were really brother and sister. That was f--ked up...

(Yeah, I'm just messing with them)

I hated the ending but what jobowker wrote is pretty much how I took it and seems to be the most commonly accepted answer even though there are others.

For a moment there I thought that the ending was even crazier than I thought...

OK.. so I'm not the only one that hated...
I felt like the writers had some really good ideas and will to write and first so they did something somehow "believable".
They saw it was working, was popular and had high ratings, so they started lacking and they thought "OK. let see what is the craziest S#!t we can write and see if people keep watching this train wreck"

Yeah, the first few seasons were good then it took a left turn to STUPID. My wife and I gave up on it shortly after that.

We hated the ending also. And all of the flash here and there, freakin sucked to follow. Still, one damn good show.

Main par ending but worth the ride. I don't think I've liked a show as much since, except maybe Friday Night Lights.

Many shows are started without the end game in sight. The writers were building the plane as they were flying it. When they needed to come to some sort of close, I'm sure they looked at some of the forums and what some of the fans were saying.

The show's runaway success made it difficult to reign in everything that had been presented and find a way to "explain" everything.

We hated the ending too. How frigging stupid. Try watching Breaking Bad next. we got hooked on it. I would watch 2-3 episodes at a time.

I think the show got ruined by the writers strike. Lots of shows during that season weren't as good when they came back after the strike.
You are definitely not the only one who hated the ending. It is widely and almost universally loathed.

My take of the ending was that they were all dead. I thought the ending sucked too.

That is exactly what I was thinking... I just kept going because I was watching on netflix, without commercial breaks and I could fast forward some stupid parts (the past life of Sun and Jin was extremely slow and dense!!!!).
If I would have watching the original show with once a week episodes and commercial breaks, I would have probably dropped it around season 4...

I read an interview where the creators stated that they started writing with just a basic outline, no real plot or purpose. They started a lot of story lines but they never finished many of them. It got to a point where they were sort of messing with the audience, just throwing in random stuff. It was almost like a game for them.

I watched the entire series but the during the last couple of seasons, it was more of a "okay, lets see what kind of crap they came up with this week". The writers didn't know how to end the series and it showed.

I think they were chasing the fans left over from the Island Series that was a hit that came to an ubrupt ending that pissed off the fans. Lost came along the following season with JJ Abrams Outline and started off like gangbusters. As he took on other gigs, his writers had carte blanche to do what they wanted. Usually isolating on the Actors that were scoring big on the TV ratings. The show started to go downhill in the ratings and finally they pulled the plug and came up with the lame ending. Just like the Island series.
