Calcutta Cooler, Yeti Wanna be

3 Attachment(s)
I bought a Calcutta 84 quart cooler because I wanted a larger cooler that would fit under my leaning post. My leaning post is 31" inside. I am replacing a Magellan 50 rotomolded cooler. This was the only cooler that I could find that was larger that would fit.
Ordered it and received it yesterday and I was not very impressed with the quality of it. It has some pretty rough edges.
Has anyone else had any experience or opinions with these coolers? How do they hold up etc..

It's kinda ugly but unlikely to affect the functionality. Maybe you can contact the company you bought it from, or Calcutta directly and see what they say.

Yes I have until Jan. 8th to return. I'm just not sure if I want to exchange or refund on it. Looking for feed back if anyone has used them.

You generally get what you pay for, but with Yeti, the price-margin must be huge, due to hype and advertising.

Your photos don't appear to be damage, but molding errors, probably a defect in the mold itself.
In general, injection molding often produces better detailing than roto-molding.

Have you checked other brands for a size that will fit?

I would explore Taiga Coolers...cheaper than Yeti, and all made in the US, while some of the Yetis are made in China and the Philippines, plus Taiga is avail. in colors, even camo.

White is more thermally efficient, and generally looks better on a boat, but often stains or yellows...I have one with permanent red-wine stains. If sitting in direct sun, a silver space-blanket really helps in keeping ice much longer...I have one made by a friend for an exact fit, with elastic hem so it doesn't become airborne, and a zipper for easier opening. Difficult to sew, but she found an adhesive that actually bonded and was more durable than stitching.

That doesn't look bad to me for a cooler.. if it cut my hands or legs when I walked by I'd be annoyed..

Check out RTIC coolers.. Half the price of Yeti and very comparable. I have a Yeti 65 and a RTIC 45, plus a soft RTIC 40 cooler I use for tailgating. I wouldn't bother buying another Yeti but I'm happy with mine.

I'd send it back. That would bug the crap out of me, and even if it's not the most expensive cooler, it's still not cheap.

I bought a big Grizzly for my boat -- super happy with it.

I did not buy this cooler based on cost but fit. My leaning post is 31" on the inside. I currently have a 50 quart and was wanting something in a 70-80 quart roto molded cooler. This was the only thing I could find that was less than 31" wide that would fit. Most of these seem to be short and wide.
Anyone know of a cooler with that size and dim. please let me know. I checked on as many as I could find and this was it.
I am annoyed by the way it looks because I am a QC Inspector and that's the kind of thing I reject.

To be honest one of my Yeti coolers displays the same defect as your Calcutta though not nearly as bad. It never affected the functionality so I hasn't bothered me. But that same Yeti was backed into with a trailer :( so I may be replacing it with an RTIC.

Looks very similar to the Ozark Trail version. I hate, hate, hate the latches. If there is an RTIC that would fit, that would be my choice.

You get what you pay for. Calcutta sunglasses aren't as good as Maui Jims either. However, for the price point Calcutta products usually are decent.

Avid 24 10-14-2016 11:33 AM

You had a 50 and wanted 70-80 but had to be 31 or less wide.

The cooler you bought seems to list most places for $349?

A Yeti 65 is 30 1/2 inches wide and would have been $399?

Return the Calcutta and get the Yeti :)

Facts are facts... love how guys go gather facts based on available information.

Rtic makes a great product, only down side is they don't have any larger coolers.

I am in the same spot as you and settled on the Yeti 50. Frigid Rigid has a bunch of taller coolers. They are not cheap but maybe one will fit for you.

speckfisher 10-17-2016 05:41 AM

I returned the cooler. I will check out the Frigid Ridged. Cost isn't as much of an issued as larger capacity and fitment.
Thanks

South jetty is another brand that makes larger ones. I don't know anything beyond the info in the thread here on THT but some seem to like them.

jwfost 10-17-2016 04:35 PM

williamwallus 10-17-2016 04:45 PM
