Heres my gig and why I bought mine. I've never had a drone and I wanted a DJI bad, but for me to get a FPV one, I'd have to spend double to triple what I spent. I personally will probably upgrade to the DJI but for $400, its VERY comparable to the DJI 3 pro(from what I've read) and that thing is almost $1,000. Before I went and spent $1,000 I wanted to make sure I'm going to get my use out of it because I'm a hobbyist and not a pro trying to make a movie to sell to hollywood. I thought the 3dr would be a GREAT entry level drone for my to toy with until I decide if its my thing or not. I'm sure there is much bigger and better, but probably not for the price point especially with the extra battery which is $120 and the gimble $100, and then an extra set of blades. If I can use this thing, and then in a year or two(depending on how much use I get out of it) I figured I can sell it used(if I don't destroy it) and get 250-$300 bucks for it. If not, for $400, I can at least torture the hell out of my dog with it ha.

Oh....and I have a go pro already that is ready to rock so it made even more sense for me to snag it. That me. If they don't make parts for it in a year or two, I'm sure someone will have some aftermarket blades or motors for it, and if not, I'll have a skeet shoot with it or something.

15 minutes with the gimbal and GP attached.

I disagree with who said the Solo is like the Phantom 3 Pro. The Solo uses WIFI, which is an urban error is not that great. One of the problems they had was major signal drop out. Most of you don't need the Phantom Pro if your just getting into it. The Advanced for $799 shoots 2.7K video. And if your going to be spending 800-900 bucks you might want to seriously think about spending 1200 and get the Mavic Pro. It has it all over the Phantom series. Spending $400 on the Solo to me is just throwing your money away. 3DR is getting out the business, parts and service and updates won't be avialable much longer.

This just in..........

DO NOT FLY NEAR HURRICANE RESPONSE EFFORTS

As a result of Hurricane Matthew, there will likely be significant recovery efforts and the FAA may issue flight restrictions in the vicinity of disaster areas. During response operations to Hurricane Matthew, authorized aircraft may be flying at very low altitudes over affected areas.

Unauthorized UAS or drone operations may prevent other aircraft from performing life-saving missions and increase the risk of mid-air collision. Anyone, including hobbyist or recreational fliers, who interferes with disaster response efforts is subject to civil penalties of up to $32,140 per violation and possible criminal prosecution.

Unmanned aircraft system (UAS) or drone operators are responsible for checking applicable flight restrictions before operating and must not interfere with any aircraft assisting in hurricane disaster response operations, regardless if there is a flight restriction in place or not.

Drone operators may obtain information about posted flight restrictions by using the FAA’s B4UFLY mobile app or by checking the FAA’s website: https://pilotweb.nas.faa.gov/PilotWeb/.

UAS or drone operators supporting disaster response operations must be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prior to operating. Operators may seek approval by following these steps:
The operator must secure support from a governmental entity, and the operation must directly contribute to the response, relief, or recovery effort.
After completing step 1, the operator must contact the FAA’s Systems Operations Support Center (SOSC) at 202-267-8276for assistance.
After calling the SOSC, the operator must also send the request via email to 9-ator-hq-sosc@faa.gov.

You can look at these links....

3DR's Solo was a great idea, the problem was it was executed very poorly. The entire product line was pushed out the door to compete with the Phantom 3. They needed 3-6 more months to work the bugs out. Everything was months behind. I actually pre ordered mine in March, it was suppose to ship in April. I didn't get my first one until July, the gimbal would ship 60-90 days later.

DJI just beat them to the punch with an overall better product. I'm not a DJI fanboy. I still think they has lousy customer service, but its better than it was considering on my 3rd Phantom and one Inspire. The Inspire launch was a small cluster fuck, some of the units including mine had a very bad leg shake, long story short mine went back after 6 weeks. Where DJI shines is their ability to fix mistakes very quickly, either with hardware or software updates.

See you guys in a week, wife and I are off to 6 nights in Vegas early AM Saturday. And yes I'm taking my Phantom!

Most of what I have read states that the DJI Phantom does not play well with Android. If that is true and one has no IPhone, then the cost of purchasing an IPHONE would make the DJI even more expensive.
Does DJI offer expansion slots for future expandability or will 1 have to upgrade in a year or 2?

Not sure where you read that. I have 4 friends with Phantoms that use Android devices and they work fine. I prefer an iPad Mini, I think its the perfect size......

Tablets and phones that work well DJI GO

Overview

There are a wide variety of Apple and Android devices available. It's important to make sure you're using a device that is powerful enough in order to prevent the DJI GO app from lagging, freezing, and/or crashing during use. The following list includes devices recommended by Phantom Help (►), devices recommended by DJI (►), and other devices that are most often recommended by Phantom pilots.

────────────────────────────────────────────────── ───────

Apple Devices

►► iPhone 5s--(4 inches ― A7 chip)
►► iPhone 6--(4.7 inches ― A8 chip)
►► iPhone 6 Plus--(5.5 inches ― A8 chip)
►► iPhone 6s--(4.7 inches ― A9 chip)
►► iPhone 6s Plus--(5.5 inches ― A9 chip)
►► iPhone SE--(4 inches ― A9 chip)
►► iPhone 7--(4.7 inches ― A10 chip)
►► iPhone 7 Plus--(5.5 inches ― A10 chip)
►► iPad Air --(9.7 inches ― A7 chip)
►► iPad Air 2--(10 inches ― A8X chip)
►► iPad Mini 2--(7.9 inches ― A7 chip)
►► iPad Mini 3--(7.9 inches ― A7 chip)
►► iPad Mini 4--(7.9 inches ― A8 chip)
►► iPad Pro--(9.7 inches ― A9X chip)
► iPad Pro--(12.9 inches ― A9X chip)

Notes:
Both Wi-Fi only and cellular iPad Air/Mini/Pro models are compatible. Only cellular models have GPS. You do not have to enable the cell service in order to use the GPS. The DJI GO app currently only requires GPS on an Apple device when using the Follow Me feature or to reset the home point to your current location if you've moved elsewhere after taking off.

Tablets wider than 6.75 inches (including the case) will require an extender to be installed on the remote controller mount. The iPad Air will fit without case. This extender is designed well and will securely hold a tablet that's up to 8.25 inches wide.

Your Apple device will work better out of the box if you follow these tips.

No expansion slots on any of the DJI products that I know of. Things change, every 18 months computers and the like get better, faster and cheaper

Best buy all over is officially sold out.

I have a few flights on mine now and its met my expectations for what I'm trying to do. I seriously almost crashed it already when I decided to take it blindly into the woods filled with reeds and vines ha. I me personally, have already got my money's worth imo. Its justified my questions if drones are for me or not. I've lost way more at Atlantic City after a few bad hands then what this drone cost, and I'm sure I'll have plenty of more flights as long as I can keep it out of the woods ha. I don't regret my decision at all and I may upgrade to a dji later on if this one ever breaks or I feel the need to do such.

I got mine set up today, set up was stupid simple, app is easy to use, first flight was awesome and i got 17 minutes out of my 1st flight 22% was left.

2nd flight i changed settings to go a bit higher and faster.

For the money....... it's way worth it for me even if it goes in the drink tomorrow !

Video footage was really smooth and not shaky at all.

I couldn't believe how easy it was to fly and control.

The wife picked me one up from our local Best Buy yesterday and being that it is my first drone, I am wondering how easy it was to learn the functions as well as how well the wifi worked.

Seriously it was SOOOOOO easy, watch the first flight videos they offer and the setup vid too,
when i bought mine yesterday, they had all the extras except the extra battery, the battery will arrive tomorrow at my house, the 2nd battery is a MUST have and im thinking about a 3rd to be honest.

I was on track to spend 1700.00 on a drone 4 months ago but i just never did it and i'm glad i did not. I'm just a weekend warrior with this, i'm going to play with this one, then i plan to buy a waterproof one, the MARINER i think they call it

I have had a solo drone for the past three months. If you have a gopro it's a decent drone. If not save your $ and wait for the mavic pro (I wll add one to compliment my solo).

the solo is super easy to use flys very well in heavy air,I flew mine on the top of a volcano on Ascencion Island in 25kt wind gusting higher and got very stable footage, I was shocked.

The main drawback is no way of launching frm a boat....3dr advertised a "boatmode" but its still not out and with them pulling out of the consumer market I doubt we will see it. So to get action shots of the boat you have to take off from land and thats not really optimal for offshore footage.

Its a good drone but not worth more than the recent discounted prices

I don't have a Go Pro however I have thought about getting 1 as I could use it for other applications aside from just the drone.

Seeing as the DJI Phantom 4 comes with a cam already would it be cost effective to return the 3DR Solo and forego the Go-Pro and get a DJI Phantom or stay with the 3DR Solo?

I like the fact that the 3DR Solo has expansion slots as well as the open source. Will I really need all of the gizmos or wiz bangs offered by the DJI?

I use android with my dji phantom and the new inspire we just got at work. I use a nexus 7 but have used a galaxy s6. No issue with each. Some new features come to Apple first. I think the most recent was live streaming to Facebook. Android got it a couple months later. In the flip side if you use litchi the android app is a little different. I don't remember exactly but I think there were a few extra settings. Nothing to make you sell an Apple device though.

I don't think litchi works with 3dr solo.
