Default Fly vs. Drive - how far?

How far will you guys drive to avoid flying? What if it means an extra night in a hotel making the cost equal? Just you, no family.

If I am by myself I try and limit my driving to 5 or 6 hours. Anything further and I will fly. If we are talking with wife and kids, which is 6 total, I will do about 16 hours max. Basically if I leave my house at about 4am, I need to be at my destination by sundown. We often leave here early in the morning and arrive in Anna Maria Island to watch the sun set!

Traveling alone, the line is 8 hours before I fly. Sometimes it depends on whether it would be a good ride on the scoot or not.

Sometimes it depends on the destination, or what I need to bring with me. Can't fly with the canoe! Two days driving (1 each way) can be a lot if the time is better spent at the destination.

Being in South Florida, it's a long drive to get to any other state(s).

About 8 hours. I will price flying for anything above about 5 if it is a short duration trip, such as a 1-2 day business trip. Anything with a longer duration than that, the added convenience of having my vehicle makes it worth while.

I fly for work and it can be a pain. On domestic work trips, I will drive if I have a few days notice to be somewhere and the drive is less than 6-8hrs. This is especially true if I can stick an extra day on the trip beyond the travel day allotted.

So for me, it's 6-8 hrs drive max. Heck, I'd rather drive 5 hours than spend 5 total hours at the airport and then a 2 hr flight.

4hrs is about my drive max. Basically, I live in Central Florida. I'll drive north to South Georgia, and South to West Palm. I rode to the keys once, that was a terrible ride. If I drive that far it will be for 4 days or more, enough time to forget about the drive there.

Simple depends on how much the flight costs. I live in SFL and getting out of FL can take a long time.

About 5 hours if I am traveling light. If you throw in the ride to and back from the airport, pre-flight security and flight wait time, flight time, and rental car wait time I think five hours is about break even.

I think flying is inconvenient, rarely ever fly. Last year took a trip to Marathon. What a hassle. Flights in Miami and key west were expensive. Flew in ft lauderdale because it was cheaper by a long shot. Fly out of SC, change in ATL, get to ft lauderdale, go get the rental car at the counter, shuttle to the car, then drive the rest of the way. In the amount of time it took flying changing planes all that BS, we would've been there at the same if I had just drove. And if I drove I could've taken whatever rods and gun I wanted, ate wherever I wanted to stop.

As long as I can do it one day I'm driving. 14-18 hours for me.

I haven't flown in , gosh....at least 25 years or more. I detest the TSA. If I travel, I usually am dragging my camper behind me, lol. I really don't like driving more then 8-9 hours anymore in one stretch and avoid pulling camper at night.

About 5 hours. Exception is travelling with family to go see inlaws for a week, which is a 7-8 hour ride. I drive because wife brings a ton of crap and I like having a car.

I travel quite a bit for work always out of Bermuda. So I have to fly it. If I am in New Bern I will drive to Raleigh but not to Charlotte. So I guess that puts me at about 3 hours drive max. The airport in New Bern is so small and easy access that flying is not that much hassle.

For a 1 or 2 day trip, will not drive very far and will choose a plane.

For a 1-2 week vacation, will drive pretty far up to 1,500 miles or so.

We just drove 16 hours through the night From Va. Beach to Naples FL. Family trip with two toddlers and all the crap that does with them....couldn't imagine trying to fly, that being said Ihad the pleasure of passing a kidney stone on the way back and spent an extra 5 hours in the ER in Venice......not the best experience but couldn't imagine flying and security with the little ones....... nice to have our own car and car seats etc....

The deciding is what do I need to travel with, when do I need to be there, and which airports I have to travel through. Flying has turned into such a PIA. In most cases if it's a 6 to 7 hour trip I can drive there faster than I can fly. I have made two trip to Hartford, CT this year and on the next one I am thinking about driving.

We had a trip planned for work to travel from Jackson, MS to St. Louis. We had a late addition to the trip that couldn't get on our flight. He dropped us off at the airport, picked up a rental car, and picked us up at the St. Louis airport. If it's less than 8 hours I am defiantly driving, over that it will be a coin toss.
