This is the primary reason for seatbelt laws. It's not about saving dumbasses from killing themselves, it's about that dumbass killing someone else when he has a fender bender and knocks his own stupid ass out hitting his head on the steering wheel, leaving nobody in control of the vehicle. Of course, folks who don't use seat belts obviously don't have any common courtesy for anyone else, so they don't care anyway, as long as they have their way.

Strange accident, there are two east bound lanes at the accident site, plenty of room for overtaking vehicles to pass the slower ones in the right hand lane. The road is coming out of a canyon and it is uphill driving, with some curves.

I would like to know the rest of the story, Gabe may have been distracted by something as he was overtaking the slower vehicle.

Not wearing a seat belt? No excuse. On the same level as not wearing a PFD in the boat.
I always wear a seat belt. I never wear my PFD while in the boat.
Same level?

I think more of a comparison would be wearing a seat belt, and wearing a lanyard. A PFD doesn't save anyone but the person wearing or not wearing it. The lanyard saves not only the person wearing it, but also the people around them.

Don't tell me about insurance costs until we can inspect your diet and exercise routines.
X2

I just don't like being told what to do. Here in Florida, motorcycle riders don't have to wear a helmet, but I have to wear my seat belt. What BS.

Before we get feedback from all the nannies on here, I'm an outside sales guy and have driven over 2,000,000 without an accident. So my track record is pretty good.

Sorry to hear. I watched that show. Funny how it's him and not snookie or "the situation".

Pretty well sums it up.

Exactly. I quit drinking and smoking because I am the sole wage-earner for my wife and 4 kids and couldn't imagine what they would do without me. Heck, I don't even ride those carnival/fair rides anymore!

Sad to hear about Gabe dying for a stupid reason as he was one of the few characters worth watching on that drama queen show.

I've seen a least a hundred thousand wrecked vehicles in my line of work and hundreds where there's still pieces of face and hairs in the smashed windshield, and I can tell you my seat belt is on before I leave the driveway and you aren't riding in anything I own wo wearing one because I don't need the liability.

Definitely a solid plan.

Ahhh, the ole "it'll never happen to me" syndrome. You do realize that you're never 100% in control of what's around you, even if you are a good defensive driver?

Got to agree; why would anyone drive around without wearing a seatbelt. Sorry he's gone but...
