Default customs confiscates passports - common in US?

Olympic news says Brazil customs officials wanted to take ryan lochte (a swimmers) passport, but he had already left the country.
Does the US do that?
We had that problem in Peru , in that Peru took my wifes passport and would not give it back- I think its an intimidation thing, and it works, try walking around Lima with no passport.
I had been told don't give up your passport. we went to American embassy who made a face and one phone call and said "its ready" go pick it up, I said its after 12 PM. they are closed. They said it will be there, and it was.

Passport totally unmarked in any way indicating entry into Peru, and no computer system notation of her entering the country.

By doing this crap, Brazil keeps telling us they are just a backwards 3rd world country.

Lying to cops about a possibly fake robbery won't go over well in any country. They wanted more info, but Lochte is already back on US soil. Would be a really great easy way for an insurance scam depending on what the jewelry was he was wearing.

I have been to Peru numerous times as well as other central and latin American countries never had that problem. I know some places in the sand box would take your passport and you had to pick it up upon returning. That said I always carried an expired Passport as a back up.

Been to nearly every country in Latin America, most many times, and never had anyone take my passport. Never in Europe or Asia either.

Something funky going on with Lochte.

As a pilot I hardly ever have my passport stamped entering a foreign country. I don't know why either. Never asked. Never had any problems. Maybe I should start asking for an entry visa stamp?

Courtesy I think. Your passport would fill up quickly and they are probably used to pilots bitching.

To each his own. These kinds of events keep me here in the (what was known as) the good old USA.

I had a passport that expired in April. My company thought it would be a good idea for me to have one so I got it 10 years ago (never had the need to use it).

I just don't feel like putting up with glorified government agency BS like Customs in any country. I think it would get pretty heated if someone took my passport for no good reason. Once the BS starts your just another POS visitor. Being from the US means absolutely nothing (which I get).

So I'll just stay here sans passport.

You also were never being investigated. You are correct that it is not commonplace to have you passport taken from you(except in the Middle East).

I believe the US would take a person's passports if that person is charged with a crime and the US believes this person is a flight risk.
