It happens. They do min thrust speed and catapult testing and pretty scary for pilots that run those extreme test. This event was much worse

VAW 123 was on board Forrestal during the late 60's If my memory serves me correctly, they lost a plane during a night recovery on our Med cruise in 1968. Some of the crew was lost. These guys got a medal for saving the plane. I'm sure saving the plane never crossed their mind. They were more interested in saving their ass! Just like a grunt on the ground, he isn't fighting for Old Glory, he's fighting for himself and his buddies.

Holy shit.....talk about a sphincter dance moment. Good thing the engines on that plane were in a better state of repair than the arresting cable on the ship.

I like to watch shows like "Mighty Ships" on the Smithsonian channel. They feature carriers sometimes.

At first you wonder why they replace those cables even though they look perfect. Now you know why...
At first you wonder why the pilots hammer the throttles at touchdown. Now you know why.....

Those people are bad ass...all involved....the pilots, the flight deck crew, the captain, the maintenance crews....all of them. Bad ass people.

We splashed an F-14 off the Virginia cost during ORE on the America. Really eerie watching that Tomcat float by the hangar deck. Both pilots were fine.

Downside? We had the Secretary of the Navy, William Claytor, on board to observe the exercises.

USS Theodore Roosevelt lost an E-2 back in the early 90's, I was on a cruiser operating with them.

In a Carrier Strike Group the Cruiser acts as the Air Defense Commander so we trained closely with the E-2 crew members. In fact we had an E-2 "back-seater" onboard with us when it happened.

The E-2 was the last fixed wing attempting to recover late at night when it was lost. They were waived off (told to come around and try to land again) and it was believed they lost control at low level, no mayday or indications of an issue were reported.

The Roosevelt called over to us on the radio asking if we held them on radar (we didn't). When I reported that they believed an E-2 was in the water to the senior officer on watch the E-2 crew member was sitting right next to him. You could see him turn white, he knew they were in trouble.

I still remember hearing the emergency beacons going off on the air distress radio, we searched all night and couldn't find anything.

The next day we recovered debris, found a few of the helmets but no bodies. All five were dead.

Sad day.

I remember that day well. I was onboard the USS Hue City and one of the H-60 pilots that flew late in to the night searching for that plane. I remember flying well into the next day and spotting the debris field.
You're right. There's nothing like hearing the crash alarm going off while at sea.

They are indeed. I was never a deck ape, but had a lot of buddies that were. It's like a freaking ballet dance and you better not stumble! Sitting in a bar in Palermo, Sicily with one of these guys (a brown shirt, we all called him "Rathole") sucking down beer and shots of Ouzo, he told me he had been having a lot of problems sleeping because of a recurring nightmare. He said it was always the same and always happened the same way. He'd be scrambling after a cat launch to get ready for the next bird and he would slip and fall into the JBD (jet blast deflector) recess in the deck and the JBD would close on him and cut him in half. Haunted him the whole Med cruise.

Smalll world, I worked in CIC on Hue City..... if I remember correctly it that was a LONG cruise sitting in a search box in the Adriatic.

Small world indeed. I believe that was MED 2-93. I remember the search boxes were named "Maverick, Goose, and other Topgun references.

That was exactly half-my-life ago. Good times overall.
