Default 35th Year Business Anniversary Today

Man, does time fly or what? Given the climate of things around here today, I hope it's okay to have a little self-congratulatory post as long as I don't try to sell anything.

Seriously, I knew it was this month but had forgotten the exact date until I started getting congratulations notices from LinkedIn and a couple of other places who have my start up date on file. Not a bad accomplishment for a dumb old country boy, I suppose.

I never thought in terms of failure when I started, but I guess I never really thought I could keep things going for 35 years either. Take that Walmart!!!

Congratulations. Quite the milestone and I can only hope to follow suit.

What do you do? I lived in Knoxville for the majority of my adult life, spent many an hour on Ft. Loudon, parents lived on Melton Hill and wore that lake out while in college.

Congrats, big accomplishment

My business has been going on with me for 25 yrs on one and 17 for the other however kind of cheating since I just took over(or was DRAFTED INTO ) existing family businesses

My Accounting/Income Tax business was started some where in the late 1930's by my Grandmother (actually have a couple tax returns that were done in 1937 in my office as well as an SCDOR Audit letter where after they audit the client owed $2.11

My teen driving school was started by my Dad in 1971 and I took over at his request back in 1999, I never thought I would get involved with that business but it has done well and to be honest I actually enjoy it but even though it gets hectic at times with my schedule it is quite enjoyable most days . My Dad actually worked in driving school until he was almost 80 yrs old

Actually started my business in Knoxville in 1981 and moved it to Kingston in 1983. Southern Security is the company name, and I sell safes. Gun safes in particular.

Thanks, Larry, it's not what it used to be, but it's still paying the bills.

Congrats on your business, my parents live in Kingston now, ten miles outside of town on Hwy. 58. Cheers.

My plan at the 25 year mark was to hand it over to my son, if he wanted it of course. The industry changed a ton about that time (just when you think it's safe to breathe and take vacations etc.), so it's pretty much just survival these days. I'll keep the doors open as long as it makes a profit, but I have to admit I get a lot of satisfaction just answering the phone when a customer calls with a question about a safe they bought 30 years ago. What's really funny is having people coming in telling me their grandfather bought a safe from me, and they need one too.

Congrats to you. You deserve it. Sounds like you have my philosophy, "I'm too dumb to know I can't do it.". I started my business after I retired and I know that it takes dedication, hard work and good customer skills. One thing I did that I'm sure you did is take pride in conserving a good name. I relocated or I would still be doing it. Enjoy the success. You earned it.

Ah, "south of the river" trash.

If you don't get that, they will... assuming they've been here a while.

Congrats on that too. Surviving 25 years in today's climate is quite an accomplishment, regardless of what the business involves.

You're gonna ask for the THT discount huh?

Well forget it! That ended when somebody decided I was here "peddling my wares" and demanded my sig line be changed to where I can't even say what I do on here anymore. That actually made me laugh out loud when it happened, especially given I do boat deliveries and still have that on my sig line. It's totally in line with the rules, but I just thought it was ironic that saying I was in the gun safe business on a boating forum was somehow getting free advertising.

Ha, yes, definitely familiar with that. They moved there about six years ago, right about the time the two brothers had a shootout with the deputies. It's really beautiful down through there all the way to Chattanooga though.

Ah yes, the Houston brothers who made Roane County famous. Unbelievable, but like OJ, it finally caught up with at least one of them.

It is pretty down through there, that's for sure. Sometimes you need a bulletproof vest, but the scenery is always nice.
