Default Leukemia - HELP PLEASE

THTers,

Last Tuesday my beautiful 14 year old niece was suddenly bruising easily and not feeling well. A trip to the ER led straight to a trip to New Orleans Children’s Hospital, where tests (very unpleasant for an adult; unbearable for a child) revealed a diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). It has invaded her spine, necessitating immediate treatment. The course of treatment will last for 36 months, and began with a 29 day non-stop bombardment of chemotherapy, which includes a new drug that is currently in clinical trials. She will lose her hair; will no longer be able to play sports; will likely need to be home schooled; and her body will be ravaged by the treatment.

She is terrified, though amazingly brave. In 24 hours her life was forever changed, and she is now fighting for that very life.

I am asking the membership here to please pray for Samantha, and if you can, help out with a donation. The costs are already staggering, as the new drug is not covered by insurance. Travel, and lack of going to work each day in order to stay with Sam add to the already enormous financial burden. Please give what you can, and if you can’t, I ask you to hug someone you love. I think you all understand why.

This is a 14 year old child, and neither she, nor any child, deserves to fight something like this alone.

Thanks folks,

Big Al

I'm so sorry for your niece and family. Have you contacted the drug company and asked about a grant? (I think that is what it is called.) My Dad got one for a drug that insurance wouldn't pay for. Worht a shot. Worst case they say no.

Hey Big Al,

I'll get to the donation page, but wanted to briefly share my own story.

I was diagnosed with ALL in 1986, a few months short of my 5th birthday. I went into remission in March and continued treatment for quite some time afterwards.

I turned 35 a few weeks ago, and am a father two great (I think...) kids.

As miserable as the hole process is, there is still a whole world and whole life ahead for your niece.

Best of luck to your and your family, and remember that there really is a bright future ahead.

Sorry to hear that Al. Thoughts and prayers for her and her family and I'll be making a donation later today.

Sorry to hear of your nieces diagnosis Al. If there is a silver lining in this nightmare, it is a very treatable form of leukemia with a high cure rate in kids. Keep the faith, she will get through this, sending her my prayers and a donation.

My dad was diagnosed with stage IV SLL (there's no cure) a year and half ago, went through treatment and his tumors have vanished and he is currently in a state of remission.

Thanks guys.

Yes, the survival rate is fairly high (80% in the aggregate); but still a scary number.

I will look into the grant aspect, thanks for that.

Our daughter is named Samantha... makes it a little too real for me. Hang tough, Sam! You can beat this and I'm glad I could help in some small way.
