Default Ideal indoor humidity level?

What is the ideal indoor humidity level for basement and garage during summer months? I am trying to determine if running a dehumidifier here in the northeast is necessary for me, knowing it's a must for others. Quick google search says 40-60% is ideal but I assume that's for living areas.

Thx in advance.

If you have a finished basement or things stored in the basement shot for 40%. If you don't it will smell musty.

"The optimal growth range for mildew is 70 to 93 percent relative humidity (RH).

RH would have to be below 62 percent to stop all chances for mold growth,

although RH below 70 percent inhibits most mold growth."

All good info - many thanks.

Now I need to determine if the radio shack indoor/outdoor thermometer I have is accurate on the humidity side. It read 30% last night in the basement but then again, I have been running the dehumidifier. Once I determine if it's accurate I'll adjust to shoot for 40 to 45%.

In my basement which is only 250 sq ft, if I don't run the dehumidifier I am at 65-75% humidity - I set the dehumidifier for 40% and it pulls about 1 gallon of water out per day.
At 70% things tend to rust; at 40% they don't.
