Default Kwajalein Atoll

What up THT'ers, as some of you already know this is going to be my home for the next 2-5 years, 14 days until departure. Epic fishing and diving ahead, will be sure to follow up on this thread with pictures throughout the tour.

Does Amazon Prime do 2 day delivery there?

Wow! I just blasted through the Wikipedia entry. 2,200 miles SW of Hawaii. 13,500 natives on 90+ islands. Bike is main transportation.

It seems the US military is the largest employer, but how do the rest of the people make a living?

Enjoy!

Looks like fun, don't get yourself banned, looks like this will be your only connection with reality for a few years.

Mail only comes twice a week. As for locals making a living, from what I understand its 3rd world, so I am guessing coconuts and fishing trades. No motorized vehicles allowed.

My reality is out there away from it all, lots of island living experience under my belt, I thrive in that kind of environment, isolation and simplicity suits me.

We used to pull in there when I worked on an oceanographic ship. It was good R&R after 40 days at sea but after 3 days most of the crew was ready to go, except for the people that liked to dive. We were in heaven, clear water and incredible wrecks. They let us join the base scuba club which was great. Nice place to visit but I don't know if I would want to live there unacompanied. What will you be doing there?

Locals come over from Ebye, the next island over, they mow the lawns, work in the mess hall etc etc. They are checked in when they arrive on the base and checked out when their work day is done. Everyone goes over there once for a local island experience, most come back with the phrase, what a sh*thole

I really liked Kwaj, it had a small town, 1950's feel to it. I could easily live there for a couple years.

You can get counseling if you need it. No, I'm not kidding.

Seriously, keep that in mind.

If you're into diving you might want to get the book "In the Arms of the Sea" A historical guide to the shipwrecks of the Kwajalein Atoll, by Mark Miller. I bought my copy over there.

It covers all the shipwrecks, it might be out of print, so you may want to get a copy before you go

Air Traffic Control and accompanied, you have it made

I know people that go crazy here everyday, traffic, bills, crime, etc.

I loved Guam, DG, and Hawaii.

Shorts and slippahs, minimal traffic, think like none compared to everything else.
