Default Best "Assault" Rifle

Ok waaaay before the latest gun rush I had been interested in getting an assault style rifle.

I've had other rifles, 270, 3030, plenty of shotguns and handguns, my son has a mosburg 715 .22 I have never owned an assault style.

With that said, what do you experts recommend ??
I'd like to get something that has a common ammo 5.56 or.223 ?? As much as the AR 308 or 30.06 a peals to me it's the ammo that shy me away. The AR57 has some apeal with its simplicity of the firing mechanism, but I don't know much about them. The AR15 seems there is every thing in the world I would want but I really don't know much about them.

With the current political weather who knows what's going to happen. Like I said I was looking at this style before Orlando and San Bernardino, as well I have plenty of guns. I just want one, I want one before I may not be able to get one.

What would you guys recomend??

Thanks
Sorry for the misspelling I'm on my phone and auto txt is kicking my ass

Single shot .22 should work well for you

You can spend from $600 to $5000. I got one last year after getting suggestions here. DPMS Oracle $529 with transfer fee, red dot scope $150, upgraded trigger (not necessary) $62. So about $750 plus case and lots of ammo and 30 Rd mags. Fun fun to shoot, very accurate, get em while you can!

Do a search function lots of good info.

Based on your ask, I wouldn't want to lead an assault without one of these:

But of course, that's just me...

father just bought a Smith and Wesson M&P AR-15. still in the box but wanted to get at least one before/if the big H gets elected. Also picked up two sweet Henry repeater rifles in 44 mag as well as 3030 made right here in the great state of Wisconsin. From all of the reviews I've read the S&W is a solid place to start but as others have said the price can rise pretty dramatically.

If you want a very good reliable AR platform off the shelf I would say Daniel defense, or LWRC.
I have several and one of my favorites is just a simple LE6920.

Marty, you can search THT for the same thread...almost weekly. I doubt that you really want an assault rifle.

Smith & Wesson M&P15T (tactical version, comes with front quad rail).
I added a 3-9x40 Ziess scope I picked up cheap.
Mine shoots sub 1" 5shot groups at 100yds.
I use reloaded ammo I buy through Cabelas. They reload using Hornady VMax bullets and are great on varmits, also cheap enough to target shoot.
I have an 8" metal plate I shoot at 300yds. Even with brand new shooters I've only had 1 person miss 1 shot.
For a fairly reasonable price ($250) CMMG makes a drop in conversion kit to accommodate .22LR Rounds. It's not quite as accurate as .223, but for target practice it's fine, and use to be much cheaper to shoot (now you can't find ammo).
It takes about 45seconds to convert back and forth between .223 and .22.
