Default fraud / credit card issue- Help!

Last fall, I was a victim of credit card fraud. This wasn't the first time, and I had confidence that my credit card company would drop the charges and issue me a new card number. No sweat...

In this particular instance, I had approximately 1 dozen fraudulent charges over a 3-4 day period. Fraud investigation launched, charges waived, and new card issued as usual.

About 4 months later, one of the merchants sends me a bill for a ~$600 charge. (This was one of the fraudulent charges.) I suppose they got my name and address by researching the credit card number. So I called the merchant and explained the fraudulent activity, they supposedly made notes in their computer system, gave me a confirmation number, and said they would turn it over to their security department for further investigation.

About one month later (now), I get a bill from a collection agency for the $600, plus a $150 collection fee.

Of course, they probably can't make me pay the money, but I'm concerned about how this could affect my credit record if I refuse to pay.

What is the recommended course of action?

Contact the credit card company, the merchant, and / or the collection agency?

I've also wondered about legal assistance, but my guess is that professional help would cost more than paying the bill.

Before I dive into this ordeal, any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

My wife worked CC fraud for several years. It's her opinon that neither the merchant or the collector can contact you directly. It's the CC company that didn't pay. I would respond that you didn't purchase anything from the vendor and make sure you make it clear that any attempt to slander you or your good credit line will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.

Interesting that the merchant would contact you directly as their agreement to get paid is between them and the CC company. I would start here to get a copy of your credit report from all 3 agencies:

https://www.annualcreditreport.com

Review the reports to see if the collection agency has reported to them and then dispute the item directly with the agencies.

1. Get the fraud claim #'s for your credit card.
2. When the collection agencies call, give it to them and tell them not to call again. Ever.
3. Get a copy of your credit report from all 3 reporting agencies.
4. If it shows up, dispute it in written form, and put a fraud alert on your file
5. If you keep getting calls, then talk with a lawyer.

Try this, get an address for the Merchant and/or the collection company and SEND THE CAT in the pic for a short "visit".........
