Default A warning about buying binoculars...

I have had a bizarre experience with a binocular purchase and want to give you all a heads up when buying online. (I do a lot of boating/fishing and use binoculars often.)

I purchased a set of stabilized 16X50 Newcon (newcon-optik.com) binoculars from Digitalfotoclub.com about a year ago. The mechanical stabilizing parts simply broke apart on their own. I never dropped or abused them.

I sent them to Digitalfoto.com for repair; they concured that they should be under warranty and sent them to Newcon for warranty repair. Newcon refused warranty, blaming me and the retailer for the problem. And to add insult to injury, they kept my binoculars (I paid $500 for them) and refused to return them unless I sent in over $300 for them to repair them.

I tried everything to get Newcon to do the right thing and so did DigitalFoto.com. But they are in New York and I'm in California. $500 doesn't warrant a lawyer and small claims court was not possible. I gave up completely - there was nothing I could do that made financial sense.

Then a month ago the retailer, Digitalfoto.com, issued a full credit to my credit card for the purchase! It turns out that the retailer, Digitalfoto.com, refused to buy any more product from Newcon 'til they made my warranty claim right. Eventually Newcon agreed to refund my money to DigitalFoto and DigitalFoto passed it along to me. I immediately purchased a set of Canon 18X50 stabilized binocs from Digitalfoto.com - at twice the price of the Newcons. They are excellent binoculars.

Thank you DigitalFoto.com for standing up and doing the right thing for your customer. Shame on you, Newcon, for being such jerks!

So when it comes to internet purchases from names you don't recognize...

BUYER BEWARE!

Sorry about your problem, but in this case, I think it ended very well. I have the Cannon 15 x 45 stabilized and they are great.

The cream always rises to the top and the lumpys always sinks to the bottom.

Thanks for the heads up and glad things turned out for you.

not bino related, but my buddy who does restoration on civil war era homes returned a bosch saw he used for cutting bricks to the dealer.

Got a call from bosch and they said he had a warped shaft and a few other things wrong. He just wanted a new trigger, but they would not release it until all things were fixed. He said to send it back and they did. IN PIECES.

He threw it away and will never buy from them again. The store he bought it from would not stand behind the customer either and are now out of business.
