Default Windows 10 auto downloaded on my laptop!

I got home from work this afternoon and was going to get on my laptop to check emails. My screen said windows 10 is now 30% loaded! I never approved it to be loaded on my computer and there doesn't appear to be any way to stop it because my mouse won't work.

WTF!! I have never heard of this happening to anyone else.

Just had this happen yesterday to one of my older partner's computer. I don't think his did it on it's own, just think he clicked OK somewhere. There is a way you can go into settings and back it up to 7 if you do it within 30 days.

It's in your update settings. Had it happen to me and rolling back to a previous version of Windows was a bitch but I had no choices. At the time, those sites only worked with Win 7.

The company announced that Windows 10 will become a “recommended update” starting next year, which means anyone with Windows 7 or 8 that has automatic updates activated – the default and the best way to keep a computer protected against security bugs – will have Windows 10 automatically downloaded without asking.

Windows 10 automatically downloads on to the computers of those running Windows 7 or 8 who have registered interest in the new version of Windows

Make Windows 10 Stop Downloading the Easy Way.
If you want a really simple and easy way to get rid of the “Get Windows 10” icon and stop your PC from downloading Windows 10, you can download a little piece of freeware called GWX Control Panel - Ultimate Outsider
ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ from a developer that isn’t happy with this nonsense either.

How to revert back to prior operating system from free download of windows 10

To access this, open the Start menu and select Settings. Click the “Update & security” icon and select “Recovery.” You should see a “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1” option. Click the Get started button to get rid of your Windows 10 install and restore your previous Windows

This is total BS. I couldn't have ok'ed it because I wasn't even home.
Maybe it was set up to auto download unless I hit cancel? If I didn't hit anything it must have gone into auto download?

Since it's already downloaded I'm going to check it out see if I like it, if not I will revert back to a previous Windows version.

Since it's already downloaded I'm going to check it out.

Thanks for the instructions to go back to previous Windows version.

Russ, look at the other posting here about someone's computer going into a BSOD death loop with Win 10. It was within the last week. I googled and that seems to be a not uncommon problem. You need to make sure all of your drivers are Win 10 capable or you can have problems.

It seems to me that the popups have gotten more aggressive. I thought I saw one yesterday that said the update was scheduled and I actually had to go through some screens to cancel it.

yep I just had it start to update itself also. I also went through the trouble of looking online on how to remove those pesky reminders. I thought I had it down until 2 days later the reminders came back with a vengeance.

yeah, that was me that posted about the blue screen and death loop, happened to a family member, they thought the upgrade would be ok, within a couple months or less it went south and so far nobody has been able to recover it, this will end up costing for a new, new computer, beware, the update was KB3035583, I am sure microsoft will try and sneak it in under a different number when everybody catch's on.

I can kinda' muddle through most anything and 10 gave me fits. It worked out but I would have probably stayed 8.0 if it were possible. I had to because 8.1 (automatically updated too) kept causing all kinds of problems. 10's good once you get through the driver updates and glitches. If you keep it, just search tech forums for fixes as problems surface. Most are pretty easy to resolve; my biggest trouble was it kept dropping my mouse and cursor ...... that was not fun.

It's not hard to undo if you don't like windows 10.

I downloaded it on a Win7 machine. Video card with Win10 couldn't run dual monitors. Spent a few days off and on upgrading drivers, OEM and from supplier... never could get it to work. I just did the uninstall.

Windows 10 is bad.... really bad. If you think you want to try it out do some googling about the privacy issues. You're giving them access to everything by default. They even scan your files and look for anything illegal and report you if they find anything.

I installed it before I knew all of that and it worked great for about a month then crashed. I tried to let it restore itself but it said it couldn't so I let it try to reinstall itself. It crashed after it had erased all of my files and I was stuck with no OS. Luckily I found an old win7 disc and went back to that. When win7 stops working I'm jumping ship.

Like I said, it's really bad.

Also see my old thread where a windows 10 update destroyed my laptop. While I'm not a genius by any stretch of the imagination, I've forgotten more about Windows than many people will know in a lifetime, and I still got screwed. I ended up dropping my Windows partition via gparted and running straight Ubuntu. When I need something only available via Windows I now have to spin up a VM.

Sometimes it works ok, but sometimes it doesn't. Consider yourself warned.

Geez has anyone been trouble free for a long period of time using Windows 10? I've been using it all evening and I pretty much have it figured out so I would keep it if I hadn't heard all of the bad reports.

I updated probably 4 months ago. 1st two weeks were bad but after that it's been fine. In fact much better than any other windows short of the very original versions where simplicity reigned. Software of any kind is like that, when it 1st comes out there are bugs, bugs and more bugs. As they're identified and fixed, each following version is better ..... or at least should be better. That's why I always wait as long as possible before upgrading.

Yeah well.. Apple's way of doing business is releasing updates to everything, telling everyone "it's amazing, download it" and the end result is a super slow computer/ipad that can't be fixed and your only choice is to BUY a new one.

Geez Louise Russ. Did you hit cancel as soon as you noticed Windows 10 was 30% loaded?

I sure as hell hope not because if you did, that would mean you're now only using Windows 3.33

There was no cancel button, or any other way to stop short of turning off my computer. I know what nightmares that can cause so I really had no chance to stop it.

Love it. No issues on either of my computers running it.

Don't forget that it's running on millions of computers. The small percentage that have problems are the vocal ones.

I upgraded to 10, hated it and followed the instructions on how to go back to 8. About a week later 10 reinstalled itself.
