Restrictor Plate racing sucks.

Back in the day when the boys could really "race" at Daytona it was a thrill.

What Nascar should do is shave down the rear spoiler and eliminate some other aero stuff.

Give the boys the full potential of the engines back and let them race.

If you have the balls to sling it into the corner while sticking it to the floor, in order to get into the lead with out being glued to the track....then stand on it and go for it. That would make for a race. I'll bet you wouldn't have big packs of cars running around waiting for the big one.

I don't think you'd see many drivers without a lot of car handling experience "going for it".

I'm not saying let them go over 200 MPH, I'm saying limit the aero package and let them race.

Jr. has mentioned several times having a "good car". If he's anything like his daddy, having a "good car" means he has a rocketship.

GO JR!

Broncobirdy, you sir, are a redneck!

Kidding aside, I don't think the Northeast will ever get NASCAR, and I don't think you good 'ole boys will ever get hockey. My brother-in-law and partner, who moved up from Davidson NC in 2000, has tried several times to enlighten me. Oh well. Did I hear that Nascar is going to start allowing Toyota or Honda automobiles in? Put 'em in the wall......... Go Ford!

Started losing interest when we lost 3. I'm not really an old schooler, but NASCAR has changed a lot in the past six or so years. Most of the changes aren't appealing. It's all about the money, now. It used to be about the racing.

I lost interest when they took it from Winston. It just ain't right, without Winston"s sponsorship thru the years, I doubt if NASCAR would be here today. Toyota????? WTF

I agree it lost its charm when the old man passed....Jr. shows glimpses of his father from time to time....Thats special. NASCAR has put all the fans that got them there in the back seat and is now driving the bottom line....The incessant animations of aero push/aero draft during the races on TV are way obnoxious! Agred I loved non plate races the best, it brought out the most skill ful drivers....
GO #8! and anybody but Gordon!
Prediction .....JR and Truex 1 and 2!

OK ~ I KNOW I'm gonna probably catch some crap for this one, but..........

I'm excited about the fact that Terry Labonte and Tony Raines are now gonna drive for "Hall of Fame Racing" - the owners being Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.

Now I KNOW that a lot of you guys out there probably can't stand ANY of the people I just mentioned, but let me explain ~ The car (#96) is being sponsored by DLP technologies for which Texas Instruments is responsible for (and for whom Daddy'O works) so THAT'S why - besides my LIKING the Hall of Famer's named - I'm excited.

Okay..........bash away.......
I can take it ~

I do enjoy nascar alot. Im also from the Northeast and i love hockey. The one thing that does bug me about Nascar now, is these cookie cutter type tracks, California, Las Vegas, Michigan, Chicago. They are the most unexciting events on the nascar circuit and i dont even bother turning on the tv to watch the race. Now, i do enjoy Nascar, but if you havent been to a dirt sprint car race, you havent seen anything. I would highly recommend it, 3x's the experience of a nascar race.

I was in Daytona picking up our boat this weekend and the seller got us tickets to the Bud Shoot-Out. Nice suprise, but at about 5 pm yesterday the skies blackened and it didn't look good. They keep saying the storms should pass and the race should start on time! I brought out the laptop and looked at the NOAA weather and decided it was a lost cause!

Why do the announcers and commentators keep telling the people that "it should clear and start on time" when they HAVE RADAR!

Oh well, atleast the tickets were free!

OK I watched qualifying on Sunday. They get 45 or so cars out there and only guarantee the 1st two spots? Like always. Then we get the twin 150's on Thursday? Seems to me NASCAR has said it wants to make it easier for single car teams, i.e. one engine rule, yet they want to race some 300-400 miles overall for Q. Why not just qualify like every other race? Its really getting harder to watch when you factor the drama queen Parsons calling parts of the race. And Waltrip has only gotten more goofy. I won' t even get into how painful the awards were to watch in November....OK So you say just stop watching......? I can't! Not yet anyways. Should be interesting to see Toyota break in with thier dedicated race designed pushrod engine in 07. They have never had a pushrod engine so they got to build one from the block up! Whatever....I need a drink.
EDIT:

I found this tid bit...It reaks of advantage...
"We told them to take a look around at the engines in the garage," Nascar R&D director Gary Nelson says. "We said, ?We're not going to tell you what valve angle to use, for example. But go smaller than the largest and larger than the smallest.'" In other words, no thinking outside the box.

Trouble is, nobody knew the precise dimensions of that box. "So we had to reverse engineer the Chevy, Ford and Dodge engines," says Lee White, general manager of TRD. "We measured 3,000 block castings and 2,000 cylinder head castings for each one -- 15,000 total."

The TRD team set out to incorporate the best features of each engine, while hunting for Nascar-legal design tweaks. They used advanced engineering software to calculate stresses on the cylinder heads, plus computer- aided design and stereo lithography to quickly mold plastic parts. All standard in the automotive industry but fairly new to Nascar, these high-tech tools helped TRD build and test engines faster and more efficiently.

There was also a little old- fashioned design ingenuity. Early on, says David Currier, who led the seven-man design team, it became clear that Nascar's design parameters for the valvetrain, which helps control fuel intake and exhaust, was the engine's weak link, as it was conceived to handle a modest 5,000 rpm. To circumvent Nascar's valvetrain restrictions, TRD minimized the stroke. By shortening the distance traveled by the piston, they ended up with an engine that should spin faster than 9,000 rpm.

After frustrating negotiations with Nascar and nearly $2 million in development costs, TRD has produced the requisite engine, but one with enough subtle innovations to boost performance on the track. TRD technical director Pete Spence believes he has the lightest engine in the series, and he's experimenting with blocks cast out of compacted graphite to cut more weight.

Daytona is just the first step on a long road featuring 23 more Craftsman races this year. Toyota hopes that a winning Nascar presence will help it reposition itself as an automaker every bit as American as GM and Ford. Look for a TRD engine in the Nascar Nextel Cup in 2006.
Heres the total link.
