CPA question???

Can a company have a dog as an official Mascot, pay for all dog's expenses, and legitimately deduct those expenses (purchase price, medical costs, food, etc)?

Any other creative ideas out there???

WHY;?;?;?;?;?;?;?

You that hard up for a deduction, anything is "possible" until you are audited.:grin:

In my office, NO to answer your questions

If it is legit, I would not see why it wouldn't hold up under scrutiny.

I would think that it would have to be used solely as the mascot. Kinda like you cant claim home office deductions just bc you have a laptop in your bedroom.

Why?? To increase the warm and fuzzy feeling consumers get from my corporate brand identity.

You that hard up for a deduction?? Just want to make sure I don't pay more than necessary.

I appreciate the response.

While unusual, if there is a straight forward link between advertising and the animal there is case law to support the deduction.

If you were the University of Georgia, you could use UGGA as a write off.

If you owned Mack trucks and the business owned a bulldog, you could use it as a write off.

If you owned Dalmation Trailers and the business owned a Dalmation, you could use it as a write off.

If you owned Tim's Fence Company and brought your lab to work everyday, you may use it as a write off....but I don't think it would hold up during an audit.

It all depends upon the business, what type of dog and how it relates to the marketing aspects of the business. Anything can be used as a write off. The real test will be if there is an audit situation, what the IRS will and will not allow.

You can write off literally anything.

It's what will hold up under scrutiny that counts to anyone remotely worried by an audit.

willie g 12-14-2015 01:00 PM

then guard dogs are a legitimate write-off

Trollin4Tuna 12-14-2015 01:07 PM

I would not recommend that at all. What business purpose would the 'mascot' serve. Also, I can't see how it would be an ordinary necessary or reasonable expense.

Here are your chances for an audit ...... Roll the dice

No adjusted gross income 3.42%
$1- $25,000 1.22
$25,000-$50,000 .73%
$50,000-$75,000 .83%
$75,000-$100,000 .82%
$100,000-$200,000 1%
$200,000-$500,000 2.66%
$500,000-$1,000,000 5.32%
1,000,000-$5,000,000 5.38%
$5,000,000-$10,000,000 20.75%
over $10,000,000 29.93%

Sure if you can prove the dog provides a tangible benefit to the corporation and you want to get the chance to explain why to an auditor, go for it.

^^ what willie said. No problem if the dog is security, not sure about a mascot though.

My company (I) want to sponsor a fishing team. This fishing team will provide my company with advertising. The company will pay all expenses for fishing (pre-tax). This team (usually me by myself) will need to do a lot of scouting and practice. Can my company: buy the boat, fuel, repairs, tackle, bait and food in order to gain the exposure of the company name on the boat and t-shirts? I wish. This team will also have a mascot being a big Goldendoodle.

I would buy all the food and supplies at Sam's, Lowes, and Walmart and just lump it under office expense.
