Default Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Going to Punta Cana Palmer Real Resort in April. Wondering if anyone has been to this area. Looking for things to do and a good Scuba Diving operation to book a couple dives.

Any info or input appreciated.

Beautiful area, most resorts are all inclusive, food is average. Stay on the resort, not too safe on the streets. Watch closely as you drive from the airport. Lots of police/guards with big rifles.

Overall it's a good value and you'll have a great time

I have never been to punta cana, but was in puerto plata. As pyxmid stated, island is beautiful and people are VERY NICE.

If you are taking a taxi from the airport to your HOTEL. HOLD ON, THESE TAXI DRIVES DON'T CARE HOW FAST THEY GO AND WHO THEY RUN OVER! OUR GUY RAN A MOPED OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH NO REMORSE!!!! I guess they just want to get from the Airport to the Hotel ASAP, so they can have time for another fare.

I do disagree with him when talking about staying on the resort, my wife and I toured Puerto Plata while we were there, had a taxi drive us into town, and went from there. Actually right as we got to town a nice gentleman came up and offered to show up around town (seems to be very common, which is COOL with me). Of course I paid home, but the US $$$ conversion rate is so strong that $5 to me was like $172 Domincan pesos.

I will warn you, if you stay in an all inclusive resort, don't go to the local store and buy a six pack of beer, doritos, and a few other snacks. DRINK AND EAT at the restuarants and bars. After I got back from the store, my wife asked me how much it all costed. Not thinking I said I got a great deal, it was only 500 pesos, hmm that is $15.00 oh well. Live and learn.

We do plan another trip to domincan republic, just not sure when!!

GREAT TIMES WILL BE HAD BY ALL.

We were in Punta Cana for Christmas and stayed at the Sunscape the Beach. This resort is approx. 45 minutes from the airport. It was probably one of the best places we ever stayed and would recommend it to anyone. Food was fantastic, accommodations were great (very clean), all name brand alcohol ie. Grand Mariner, Johnnny Walker etc. etc. . The resort was inclusive so you could drink what ever you wanted and as much as you wanted. Resort had a Casino, nightly entertainiment, largest pool in the Dominican. You will not be disappointed at the resort. Deep sea fishing was good? On the way back in from deep sea fishing, there were all kinds of scuba and snorkeling, so I do not think you will run into a problem finding these out. I know the deep sea fishing people picked us up and dropped us back at the resort, so I am not certain if the scuba people do as well. Usually all this info is available in the lobby which also caters to all the tour groups. Hope this helps. Dwain

Just got back from Punta Cana last week. Stayed at the Catalonia Bavara. 20 minutes from airport and all inclusive. Make sure you bring a pen with you to fill out your immigration forms at the airport. Costs $10.00 to enter the country. We where told not to venture outside the resort after dark and never drinnk the water or mixed drinks outside the resort. Did two wreck dives at 50 feet and the reefs where all "dead" still fun though. Resort was nice and clean but outside the resort was a mess. Promarine was the dive outfit, from Germany, Each dive was around $40.00 Fishing SUCKED.

Thanks for all the input. Nickys Toy, I'm a bit surprised at the reef situation. We ran into the same thing in Jamacia 2 years ago. How was snorkeling?

Snorkeling at the resort was a waste of time because it was all sea grass! They actually had diesel air compressors going on the beach with guys in the water blowing the grass out. They would then float it to shore. The snorkeling excursions that the resort had where off the resort and you went out on a boat. My dives where right out in front of the resort maybe 1/2 mile off the beach. Maybe the diving is better at another part of the island, very few fish and no color in the reefs at all. It was a great cheap vacation for me, food was good and the resort was very accommodating. Go enjoy yourself the beach was wide and beautiful along with all the topless sunbathers (ALOT) From what I hear Mexico is the diving hotspot.

Had a great time here. We ventured out into the sea grass and being patient we found some huge starfish, puffer fish, urchins and nice fish. Went out into the grass in about 15 ft. of water.

Diving was OK, reefs are definintely distressed. Heard the best diving was SE around Catalina Island, about 1-1/2 hour bus ride from Punta Cana...................we decided not to make the trip, but know friend who did and said it was absolutely beautiful, well with the trip. Marine life and reefs there were excellent.

Diving was included at our resort, no extra charge. Easy boat ride and the divemasters were excellent. Didn't overload the boat, most we had was 8 divers with 2 divemasters.

Tried posting some pics, but too large to post.

It was a great relaxing trip, excellent service at the Paradisus Palma Real Resort, All inclusive is the way to go!!! Everyone was extremely nice to us. Definitely a benefit that my daughters speek Spanish, although, they were quick to help with English if necessary .

Did the ATV trip, really enjoyed that trip.....................the only time we ever left the resort.

Definite Do-Over for us, had a great time.
