Default Windows 10 help @*)%)@@((**$$$

My better half "upgraded" from 7 to 10 on her laptop.

All bookmarks are gone. All pictures are gone. etc etc. Everything is blank in files and all her desktop icons have disappeared too.

She is ready to hunt down Bill Gates with knife in hand and de-ball him personally.

Not understanding what the upgrade would do, she failed to make a backup.
Tell me that MS was smart enough to store all this data somewhere before making the switch and it's just in some hidden file on the C drive.

It normally gives you the option to keep everything or remove it...hopefully she didn't choose the latter. It may also have created a new profile. You can go to C:/Users and check the folders (profiles) in there to see if you find your stuff. Always a million options but I would start there.

PM me if you really need more help...have 20+ years in the IT world.

I've upgraded dozens of computers to Win10 and never lost a file. I've always selected the "keep everything" choice. I have not seen what happens when you don't select "keep everything" but it looks like you wife has.

Within 30 days you can revert to your previous version of Windows. Perhaps it will revert your files as well.

Probably not if you choose the get rid of everything option. Perhaps some kind of data recovery service could help, sooner the better I would guess as the more you use it the more it will corrupt whats left of the old data.

If you're happy with your documents, you can keep your documents. Lies! Lies! Lies!

Look in the C:\Windows.old folder. Some additional reading and help here.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but this was too easy.

She didn't re-start after updating to apply the changes. It was all there.

I just had one laptop that had switchable graphics give me issues. Basically it acted like there was a 2nd display to the left of the laptop screen and it launched everything over there where you couldn't access it.

I had to go into BIOS and turn off Switchable graphics for it to act like there was one screen.

Wait until after the first of the year when Microsoft starts forcing upgrades to Win 10.
