Question Airsoft gun recommendations...

My son's 12th birthday is coming up and he wants an airsoft gun. I don't know jack about airsoft guns and I would be buying based on comments off Amazon.

Any recommendations for a rifle?

my boy is into it also.

Pyramid Air is pretty decent website. my boy and his buddies are pretty fond of the Umarex Elite Force brand.

I am fan of guns in all of their forms.

Unfortunately so long as SB281 remains in effect and he remains a resident of the state he will not be getting an AR anytime soon. Not to mention he can't battle it out with his friends in the woods with the real deal.

Will look into Pyramid. I noticed Crossman sells airsoft.

Are they all single shot or are there semi-automatic versions?

My son use to shop (i.e. Dad can you buy me this) from Airsoft Atlanta. www.airsoftatlanta.com

I am still finding those stinking BB's all over the place!

Umarex makes a nice CO2 powered Combat Zone Enforcer pistol. It's 400fps and 15 shot clip.

Airsoft guns are actually great on boats if birds bother you while fishing. You can pop off a lot with the battery or CO2 versions. It one of my son's favorite things to do while fishing.

Do they use the paintball BBs? I always wanted to get a group of people out on our property (in the wintertime) and battle it out in the woods/fields.

yep, BB's everywhere - I agree

yep, my son has real guns also (not ARs - but 22's, shotguns). we live in burbs - he can shoot the airsoft rifle at targets in the backyard with no problems

there are variety of gun types - battery operated, spring operated, pneumatic, etc. the battery operated rifles are fun - my son has a battery operated M4 with metal gears and gearbox that can shoot full auto.

So what do kids do with these things? He's got a BB gun already. Do they shoot each other or what is the appeal?

The thought of plastic bb's everywhere is giving me second thoughts.

my boy uses it interchangeably with his BB gun - pretty similar from a utility perspective. he shoots cans and targets in the backyard.

i know they make what is called a "marking BB" for airsoft - a bit different than what people would consider a paintball (i.e., it is covered in some pigment, not filled with a liquid

Its a blast and we have done it several times. Winter is the best time to do it when you can layer some clothes to take the sting out of the hit. Tried it once in the summer and its not much fun getting shots to bare skin.
