mom's apartment 100 degrees !

Was at my mom's apt to install casters on her bed. She has all the windows closed and outside door closed. She is wearing long sleeve sweater. It is 100 on the thermometer .inside and humidity is very high

I walk in and about die from the heat even before I start doing any work. She comments that it is very comfortable today! :o Oh well she is saving on her electric bill.

She is 94 .

i sweat when it is 30 degrees out. when will I be comfortable at 100?

That's the way they like it here too. Bet her power bill is outrageous in the winter living in that cold of a climate.

atcfris 09-09-2015 04:47 AM

That's disgusting.

My parents are in their 70's and Mom has alzheimers a few years ago they started keeping the house so hot I started staying in hotels so I could sleep. I don't know what it is about heat and old people

muskamoot 09-09-2015 05:11 AM

She's going nuts.Turn the air on and keep a closer eye on her.

LBC 054 09-09-2015 05:18 AM

closed windows and doors in this oppressive heat is a recipe for disaster.

Design59 09-09-2015 05:22 AM

I have the opposite problem. My mom always wants it so cold you could hang meat.

chimmike 09-09-2015 05:25 AM

my grandfather was the same way when dementia and alzheimers took over.
That and his kidney disease was pretty advanced. It would be 80-something in their house and he'd be in a sweater, pants, and long sleeves. So hot in there my sinuses would stuff up.

It all depends upon the old person and their condition. Some may be attributed to mental health issues, but alot of the time it is attributed to joint issues. My mother in law has had both hips replaced and one shoulder, she loves it hot like that and will wear long sleeve shorts and sweaters to help hold the heat in. I start dripping sweat if I do any physical exercise when it's above 50 degrees, so we have a bit of temperature conflict going on. She said it helps keep her joints loosened up and feeling good and anything cooler and she starts to feel the pain.

I had a high school teacher that had bad arthritis and she would keep a space heater under her desk blasting on high heat year round. I would get within 10' of her desk and start sweating......

Yes older people like the heat much more than the cold.

However, they are prone to dehydration . . . take care of your older parents and make sure they drink lots of fluids . . . they are a precious resource

"Charlie, turn up the heat and chase the kids off of the lawn" ;) Remember you will be there soon enough!

bayfisher92 09-09-2015 07:31 AM

No wonder they flock to florida  There is this elderly lady near my parents that is widowed so I go over to talk to her on vacations; have to ask her if we can chat on the patio cause she keeps that place at 88 degrees.

Lprizman 09-09-2015 07:57 AM

better lower the temp and the especially the humidity for respiratory complications @ 94,,or your next visit may leave you in mass regret

furthermore if she is 94,,,your no spring chicken and could be susceptible to heat exhaustion, stroke or heart attack while doing work there in those conditions

just some kind advice,,,spent a lot time around the elderly my whole life since around 9,,my Mom's a nurse and was raised in nursing homes and treatment facilities,,until this past March when my gram passed @ 94 spent a minimum of 4-6 hours with her and others a week

Many older folks take blood thinners. Those can cause one to feel the cold more easily. I take them and am more less tolerant of the cold but not to the temps noted above.

Dad started wearing quilted undergarments to sit out in the yard with during the summer heat. He lost weight around the same age and soon his mind started going too. It wasn't long after that he was swept away.

Take care of your mom and do it now. fix the thermostat where she can set it where ever she wants but it stays on 78.

I don't have parents any longer.
If I did, they would would be basking at a brisk 70 degrees everyday and learning the latest cool apps from their grandchildren.
