Default Rich moron tries to break record in Long Island sound...hits buoy at 148 mph.

I for one am glad his boat is torn up.

I know it means nothing to him but this could have been anyone of us out fishing.

I can't find much about this other than this live leak video... what's your thoughts? Guy trying to break a record goes 148 mph into fog where even though he has a plane spotting for him he can't avoid a green can... imagine if you were out in the fog with your family.. what a fucking idiot here. I hope he gained some respect for the water, I'm sure he didnt.

They are lucky.

I need a pile of additional information before I render an opinion.

you should change the name of this thread. You sound like a complete jerk. Dude has a great reputation, and was attempting a record for which all proceeds would be donated to a great cause.

First Of all, this is easily the 4th time this has been posted on THT. Second, WTF is wrong with you? You're glad his boat is torn up? Really?

Really?

I don't care what his rep in and what proceedes would be donated. He hit a MARKED navigation aid that is CLEARLY represented on every chart out there...in DENSE FOG that he clearly could not see.

This guy endangered every boater out there on the water in this area that day. It could have been you and your family.

Yes, hopefully it was a big enough loss that he wont be going 148 mph IN FOG WITH NO IDEA about what is directly ahead of him!!

Guy was doing 150mph in fog...he's a moron as I stated in another thread about it.
He should have called it quits, but his "gusto" prevented it. He is lucky...as is the poor young kid (maybe his son?) that went along for the ride.

200+ feet/sec (IIRC) in fog where vis was estimated at 50-100'

Still learning how THT works. I guess it is fun to have four roller coasters with the same theme going on at once.

I may start my own "Fast boat hits a buoy" thread to fit in.

Don't worry...this forum and any magazine about fishing/hunting would be non-existent if stuff wasn't rehashed.

While the guy had admirable intentions with the donation to charity/cancer/etc, he lacked judgement. Should have throttled down immediately when he ran into the fog. It's OK to abort your attempt if conditions turn bad. You live to try again another day. Heck, he was way ahead of his old record, and probably had time to slow down and still break the record.

In this case he could have easily killed himself and all aboard, not to mention other boaters. He's lucky this can be a learning experience -- could have easily been a whole lot worse. So with all those facts weighed, yes, I think he is a moron.

Here's a good summary of what I think of him:

From http://www.27east.com/news/article.c...Fish-And-Fools

Another thing I’d like us all to say: The driver of the racing boat that crashed into a buoy off Orient last week going 148 mph should be put in jail, fined a lot of money and forced to sit through a full safe-boating course every month for the rest of his obviously pretty empty life.

As someone who was also out in that fog at the exact same time on Wednesday morning, directly in the path of their course and just a couple miles east of where these idiots were luckily hip-checked by a green nun, the idea that they did not immediately throttle down when they hit a fog bank that thick is absolutely sickening. If there’s anything more useless than setting some obscure tiddlywinks speed record, I don’t know what it is. And they put lives—not just their own, unfortunately—at risk to do it.

Clearly they weren’t even paying attention to a GPS plotter, much less radar, and at that speed and with their spotter plane—talk about classic overconfidence in a supposed failsafe—unable to see their path, they could easily have killed some early-morning fly fishermen heading from Sag Harbor to Fishers Island.

I’ll put the jackass’s name here so it pops up on his Google search for himself: Stuart Hayim. Apparently he’s a car salesman to other narcissistic fools like him.

The only upside to the whole thing is that these vain clowns put cameras on board to record their glorious boobery (and didn’t wear helmets so everyone could see how cool they are more clearly). Check it out on www.liveleak.com and search for the aforementioned idiot’s name. Glad nobody got hurt.

Have to agree, the guy is an idiot for going that fast in those conditions.
