Default Shroomin'

for the edible type...

Went yesterday to the farm and buddy brought a book, "Mushrooming Without Fear." Found some mushrooms, but still didn't take the plunge into eating them. Found what looked like cauliflower mushrooms, a chanterelle and some sort of bolete (finally figured out it is a red cracked bolete and isn't the best tasting, although edible).

Anyone here go pickin' shrooms?

Also, came across a pretty nice canebrake rattler while walking through the woods. He didn't get too pissed until we poked him with a stick to get him to rattle.

Cool snake pic. Funny you bring this up. I was getting some huge shrooms out of the yard yesterday and was wondering if they were poisonus. I would like to know myself.

From what I gathered from buddy and the book, shrooms without true "gills" are pretty much edible. Some have false gills, though. Found a lot with gills so we didn't even mess with them.

I'm still scared to try them, but I probably would do the chanterelle. It has a lookalike that is called the jack o' lantern or something like that, but it supposedly glows in the dark. I know chanterelles will start popping up here in next month or so.

Good information. I'll try to get a pic of them when they come back out. They are in zoysia grass, coming back in the same spot each week. I've been having to keep my three year old son away from them which isn't easy but may not matter after all.

My days of picking shrooms ended years ago. I'll stick to buying mine from the store.

I quit years ago too. Kinda grew out of it. The shrooms we were getting near Conway SC were so good you had better be where you were going to stay for the next 36 hours before you ate any.

Used to go mushroom hunting all the time; If it even resembled a poisonous one I avoided it. A lot of copycat shrooms out there. Puffballs are safe and easy to tell/pick. Great fried. You have seen them; look like round white half balls on the ground. Hen of the woods is good too and easy to find; just look around logs, they grow like stairs on top of each other Bearded Tooth and Shaggy mane are good shrooms too. The ones that grow on cow poo.. are the ones you sell to college kids. but remember; no matter if its not poisonous, you want to make sure its not rotten or decayed. That will get you sick no matter what. Damn I need to go out and find some hen to munch on.

Saw some puffballs, too, but didn't know about them until after we left. Found one patch of Hen of the Woods, but it wasn't much to them so we just left 'em.

Cow poo shroomin' ain't for me...I prefer to buy them from people that grow them in closets or under the bed

We haven't had rain in a long time so there are no mushrooms in N. NJ. Here is a good group that I follow: https://www.facebook.com/groups/352940311570379/

They said look for them growing up through the cow patties.

Make some tea with them.

A day and a half...yeah, that's about right...

What was so damn funny? Couldn't stop laughing...

Glad I had lots of time to waste...

Cow patty shrooms - if you pinched the stem and it turned purple, you had da kine.

Shrooms used to find me right before the pink elephants showed up. It was like they worked in pairs.

Sheepshead (aka hen of the woods) are delicious. When you cut them leave the base a little and it will come back every year

Had a friend that scared me off ever trying those funny mushrooms. He told me that he and another guy knocked back a bit of them. And then he's telling me of these great sandwiches they made the same night - raspberry jam and canned tuna.

Yeah, you gotta be pretty high to think up that delicacy.

Bah, trippy shrooms are fun...Liberty caps are where it's at. Eat an eighth and watch the original Alice in Wonderland.

Good times...
