Default Shark Attack Mid Pro Surfing Contest (video)

Insane. Given it is South Africa, I would assume Great White. Never happened before. Been seen during heats, but never an actual attack. Fortunately Mick Fanning is OK.

Video of attack and subsequent rescue as it was live broadcast.

That is crazy and glad he is ok.
I'm no expert, but in this pic does the fin appear to be a dolphin or porpoise?
Regardless I would have to change my wetsuit after that encounter.

Not a dolphin, you can see its tail kick side to side not up and down in the video. Yes i suppose a dolphin could of been one its side, but then that would of had to of been a really really big dolphin. On top of all that, it would also have to be a dolphin that attacks surfers?

I surfed Jeffreys Bay many times in the 80's. Awesome rides. Never saw any sharks.

My guess would be Zambezi (Bull Shark) but it is winter over there and the water is cold, which means increased White activity.

Don't know if it intended to bite or flipped out. Apparently got tangled in his leash and lost its chit, understandably. Was definitely a close call. Cool to see the rescue boats and skis in action.

The guy in red was Julian Wilson, the other surfer in the heat.

Speaking after the incident, Mr Fanning, who was uninjured and only lost a leg rope in the incident, said: 'It came up and got stuck in my leg rope.
'I instantly just jumped away. It kept coming at my board and I was kicking and screaming.
'I just saw fins. I punched it in the back.'

Commentator Ross Williams said the incident was one of the craziest things he had seen in a competition.
He said: 'No one has ever seen anyone attacked in a heat... it was such a scary thing to see him come off his board.'
We could see the splashing and he was knocked off his board.

Spectator Kaylee Smit told News24: 'We were all watching and then all of a sudden you could see the fin so we knew it was a shark.
'We could see the splashing and he was knocked off his board.
'I thought this guy was going to die in front of us, it was so hectic.
'It was surreal. The whole crowd rose to their feet in complete silence and then that was broken by the announcer screaming over the information system for people to get out of the water.
'I am still in shock and I am shaking.'

I was watching it live when it happened and was completely in shock. Glad Mick is okay but I really wish they would have run the rest of the final.

I thought the pic that I posted was a dorsal fin but actually it's a tail fin.
Yep, shark for sure.

Doesn't look like a "SHARK ATTACK" To me it just looks like a shark checking shit out and got tangled in his leash. Or did I miss something?
