As safe as any island in the Caribbean. Road Town can be iffy at night, but you should be staying on the opposite side of the island anyway. I go every other year for about the last 15 years. I LOVE it because it hasn't been overdeveloped or Americanized.
As far as 'stuff to do', what do you want to? Great diving/snorkling. Day trips to JVD or St. Thomas. Sailing charters. There are no jet ski rentals or stuff like that. One of the most relaxing places on earth.
No all inclusive resorts or nonsense like that. Closest you will get will be Long Beach Resort.
I stay at Sebastians (great restaurant and make the best rum I've ever had). $150/night for a clean ocean front room with A/C and an ocean front pool.
Certain beaches are a bit narrow. Bigger ones are Cane Garden and where you MUST go at least for one day trip, Josiah's Bay. You can drive one end to the other in about 45 mins.
What else specifically do you want to know?

A great place to stay in the BVI's if you love the water is the Bitter End Yacht Club

You cannot go wrong with this resort.
Was there last week and it was even better than the last visit.

Sunset HH at the Bananakeet. Arguably the prettiest view I have ever seen.

Options are flight to PR then Flight to Tortola (Beef Island airport, code EIS) or fly direct to St. Thomas, and take the ferry (which is right near the airport) to Tortola. About a 30-45min boat ride.

We flew into Puerto Rico and took a prop plane to Tortolla. The place is pretty amazing.

Not to jack this thread, but we've been looking at houses to rent for a week on Tortola through airbnb.com and vrbo.com. There are six of us going and the cost is far less than a resort. Anyone have experience doing that?

We've had very good experience. Not sure I'd go with 6 though

BVI's are great area... especially if you have access to a boat. If you drive on Tortolla remember to stay on the left side... really gets crazy when you try to do it in traffic thru the round-a-bout... enjoy!

Traveled all over the caribbean. Tortola is one of my favorites. Very safe. Not too touristy. Rent a jeep. Rent house or room and explore and enjoy the island. Day trips to jost and Virgin Gorda are fun too.
