Default Pros/Cons Ipad with cell service or wifi only

I currently have a 2 yr old Ipad that has cell service as well as wifi

However looking at upgrading to newer ipad with more storage space

Admiral has new Ipad air2 that is wifi only but she only uses it in the house or trips, I have connected it through hotspot on iphone 6's and works fine

What are pros and cons

1-It does cost me $50 month on my cell bill but I do like the convience and keeps me in touch with emails(paired with phone so emails go to both but ipad easier for my old ass to see)

My Ipad is about 50/50 personal/business use but do use it a lot while on the boat, deer stand, etc

Someone told me hotspotting really eats battery up on phones which would be inconvinent when sitting in deer stand(yea I know I should not take it deer hunting but I sit in couple of big box stands watching huge power line. Keeps me in touch with business items and actually do quite a bit of business by email )

It looks like cost of new Ipad is about same either way, seems like w cell service it is about $100 more

One big reason looking at new Ipad is Admiral's Dad is getting internet and I just figured I could give him my existing Ipad and get me a new one. His is pretty bad health, just lost one leg to diabetes and had already lost part of other foot and now has prostrate cancer that has spread to his bones so pretty much stays in his relciner 24/7

He has used Ipad before and it easier than a laptop

We have also looked at chromebooks as well

Cell service for my iPad was the only option for me. The only downside is the cost, I'll take access anywhere over the additional cost. Worth every penny. I tried the hotspot from my iPhone, it worked great, but killed a full charge in no time

When they first came out it was a must, now with so much access to free wifi it is a waste. It is rare I dont have free wifi. I have both but never use the cell service any more.

Wifi version does not have built in GPS. You can buy a Bluetooth device that will do the same thing but it will cost about the same.

If you need built in GPS, get the cellular version. Activating a data plan is optional.

Standalone cellular for ipad (ATT) is now $30 for 3GB. I'm still on my old $20 for 2GB plan ( maybe it's $25). I make sure to turn off cell when I'm in a good wifi spot, like at home. Traveling, the cell service is encrypted and more secure than hotel or coffeehouse wifi.

Thanks, I do use the Navionics sometimes on my ipad while on the boat

Seems like that was what my buddy at Verizon told me when I bought my Ipad

I have a Kindle Fire and the GPS works fine. Right now I'm at my second job supervising at the stadium and the WiFi connection is better here than in my own home! For a cell phone I have a tracfone that gets triple minutes for every card I buy which amounts to $20.00 every 3 months!

X2. This really is a no brainer with a shared data family plan. The people who buy a wifi only mobile device don't seem to realize that, for the most useful applications, they've taken the "mobile" part out of the device and turned it into a Starbucks appendage.

yes we just redid our contract with ATT. A family plan with 10gig shared with 4 new Samsung S6. ATT also gave me a free 10'' Samsung Tab4 tablet with data plan. I have been using that while traveling and I really like it. I do have to pay an extra $10 a month for the tablet, but it is nice as I can set up a wifi hotspot for my wife at the airport instead of that damn Boingo access.

I bought an iPad Air, wifi only. For my needs, I'm able to hook up at home and many wifi hotspots. It doesn't have GPS. I researched the "assisted" GPS the cell version has (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS, but it seems limited. An alternative is buying a Bluetooth GPS unit, this company has many positive reviews for them http://bad-elf.com/collections/bluet...ts/be-gps-2200.

I have the Navionics HD Boating app for iPad (great app). I'm considering buying the BadElf bluetooh GPS unit, which would give me a standalone navigation capability on my iPad without requiring either wifi or cellular (so long as I preload the Navionics maps for the area I'm in). Thx
