New Job!

After 30+ years in Quality Control it's been tough to get back into it since I was laid off in 2009. Soon after the layoff I did do contract work after but soon realized once you hit the 50 year old age most companies shy away. I've had dozens of interviews and they all come back "over qualified"! I did a 2 year stint as a Dock Monitor for the Department of Commerce recording fish landings by commercial fishing boats but NOAA did away with the program and I was back looking again. Then I got a security/maintenance job at a condo high rise out of town for the midnight shift which I still do. Great people at a high end condo and no complaints except limited days 3 -4 nights a week depending on who needs to take time off.

Our Mayor told me of a part time city job I'd be suited for that could develop into a full time position. She said I should apply so I did. Waiting around for an interview for about 2 weeks I get a phone call from the DPW to meet the 2nd in command and meet him at the DPW office. No interview he just handed me the keys and asked if I could start Saturday!

The job title is Supervisor of New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium. Since I coached HS football for over 20 years I have a hunch it had much to do with it and that our family contributed much over the years to the stadium. The job involves supervising events and activities and basically baby sitting the track and field to make sure all rules are followed. I got a feeling I'll have a hand in off season football work outs too! When there are no scheduled activities or events the stadium is open to the general public to use the track.

As one stranger to another, I read the post and was happy to know that your life is getting a turn for the better. Glad to know it.

Jay, I've walked in those shoes... I went through two layoffs. One at 53 and one at 58, and it's downright scary and disheartening to endure. So happy to hear that you've landed a job that you like.

Good for you, Jay. It's a great facility.

Way to go Jay.....I have turned down 2 job offers because they didn't seem right. I still have 3 more possible offers I am waiting for written offers, I hope one of them turns out to be the right one.

Based on your writing and the pic of the stadium, Ima bet you will go to work most mornings with a smile on your face!

Thanks! It's a great facility now, a far cry from the natural turf days. It's built below sea level and the grass would never grow due the salt water intrusion.

Congratulations, you've had an interesting career, and it sounds like this will be an excellent position. People that want to work always have my greatest admiration.

Here's a link of the post I made in 2009 that got the public's interest to do something about the condition of the stadium:
