I've heard the skiing isn't as good as Crested Butte.

We were actually planning to Ski Bariloche in August ... but after some research our skiing is better in CONUS ... Figured we are going all the way to Patagonia why not do it right ..

So 3 days of fly fishing in Patagonia and 8 days in Antartica... They have a bar on the ship - they better be prepared for us....

Skipper - I tried the Veteran discount - but they are still pissed about the Falkland Island invasion

Should be a great trip. If you haven't already, read Shackleton's book and some of the other ones about him. Do you stop at South Georgia Island? Have a toast at his grave for me.

Looks tippy:

Looks like a hell of a trip, would love to go down there one day. Just watched a show this week about the US station down there and the life that goes on. Looks like they get people to sign up for work for summer time, you acutally work but there is down time. If I could leave my job for a serious extended period id probably do it. No way id stay for the extended winter time crew though, looks like hell and stuck inside for months

I was down there for operation deep freeze, resupplying McMurdo station. On the way down we hit some of the biggest seas I've ever seen in the Ross Sea (think green water over the ice con on a 300 ft ice breaker) I think the phrase that describes it best is there is no law below the 40s and no god below the 50s...

Once down in the ice though there is place as pristine as Antartica... It is one of the few places that you can chase penguins, be careful of the emperors they bite..

Triplenet,

You keep missing the "c" in the middle of Antarctica.

It looks like a great trip!

triplenet, I viewed the slideshow above. Would you mind throwing out an estimate of what your trip will cost? It looks amazing. Good luck and safe trip

My buddy who is in the travel business set it up so not 100% sure yet as he hasn't billed me ..

But - Its around 6k for the cruise ( there are longer cruises for more money) and $2300 for the air ...

We will also be staying a few days in Punta Arenas/Patagonia so figure another $2k ...

Thats around 10k +/- total... Should be epic trip ... I hope

I went in '87 for 9 days on The Society Explorer, now at the bottom of the southern ocean.
Fantastic trip. A bucket lister if you can afford it.

I worked on a NOAA oceanographic ship that was on it's last legs when they retired it in 1996. You definitely want to know about the ship you will be going to sea on down there. The Ocean Nova looks a lot better than some of them.

Notice any similarities
