Default Pop Ups everywhere

I think perhaps my son downloaded something evil, but when my computer sits, It generates 10-20 pop-ups.

I run Ad-Aware daily, Norton AntiVirus every few days and they keep coming back. Have the Window's pop up blocker set on medium.

Any suggestions or programs to control these pests?

Install, update, and run MS Anti-Spyware. It's a free download. Also, you may want to check your hosts file. It's located in your Windows/System32/Drivers/ETC folder. See if anything got added to it that shouldn't be there,

this happened to me about 6 months back after clicking on a link in the sand bar - never again - had to wipe my entire hard drive and start over....no virus software could get rid of it ..even after taking it to our company experts (big corporation)...

Have you loaded Google toolbar? After you get your problem squared away, give it a try.

To get rid of Spyware, I have been using Webroot Spy Sweeper. It was the PC Mag choice. The first time you run it, you will not believe the amount of stuff it gets rid of on your system. They also have a product called Pop-up Washer

First. a correction, its located in: WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

This is the default contents of the file (when prompted for a program to open it with, choose notepad):

************************************************** **********************
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
************************************************** *********************

Some spyware & trojans write lines to this file in order to redirect you to another site. I have a custom hosts file that I created based on information from this site: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I can honestly say that I havn't gotten a popup of any type in almost two years on my system.

I was going to suggest this also,it seems to work very well. You can do a 14 day trial,if you go on their website, and that should take care of the problem.

Thanks for the info. Surprising what great computer advice you get on a boating site. I've tried much of the programs so far; still popping. I'll keep trying, may have to clean out the hard drive.

Didnottry Firefox yet, maybe I'll give it a shot.

Any additional info??

Thanks Guys

Thanks for a great post - actually mine seems to be the worse right after running adware ....

I am gonna try all this stuff!
Also Comcast supposedly has their own free security downloads but I haven't been able to do it even after disabling my Norton.

Thanks to all again....

The Webroot Spy Sweeper cleaned it out. Best $29 I've spent
