That was nice, thanks for sharing. It really only seemed a slower pace.....in reality it moved as fast then as everything does today. It just seems like it was slower back then.

High Lit, Wollfman Jack, Greasers and the Soc's. I love the music from the 50's, I used to ride my bike around on the weekend with my mini boom box playing "The High-Lit Hall of Fame" then in my Big block Chevelle with the radio glued to the oldies. Year(s) were 1980-1989. See you don't have to be a old geezer like Bailey to like that 50's stuff. I was also lucky enough to miss out on all that great big hair music of the 80's....thank God. I am 37 Y/O and remember using my dads hair tonic ( Dapper Dan??) to grease my hair back in middle school and smoked Marlboro Reds when they were not wrapped in the sleeve of my t-shirt.

I stop at Bill's (VA Barbecue on the "Boulevard" - across from the old "Parker Field") EVERY Wednesday (as in TOMORROW!) evening, on the way home from GITAR lessons at Guitar Works! Not many of "Bill's" left hea' now - maybe only ONE that still has "car hops"!

"2 and a large LIMEADE to go, please - and some extra hot sauce!" About $6+ (tot.) now!

My "early years" cars included - in order - 1) '60 Ford Fairlane 2-dr. (cheapo 6-banger model), BUT it had a "Foxcraft" FLOOR shift, 2) '54 Chevy 4-door "stick" w/"Blue Flame 6", 3) '61 Ford Fairlane 4-dr. "stick" w/"292" V-8!

Them were around 1962-1968 - my last NEW car was a '69 Nova 4-door 6-banger "auto"! Cost about $1/lb.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, no Vets or convertibles in MY "life"!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh - the good 'ole high school days when wages were about $1.60/hr. for the part-time jobs (Safeway!) we had, and yet, we were able to buy cars, keep SOME gas in them, and take the women out on Saturday to Shoney's PARKING LOT curb service - so everybody could see our cars!

Regards,

Just a bit more nostalgia. I recently came across an insurance policy my parents took out on me the month after I was born. It wasn't a big policy (my parents weren't wealthy), but the WEEKLY premiums were 36 cents per week. My wife and I chuckled at that at first, and then began to think.....you could actually buy something for 36 cents in the late 40's. I remember visiting my grandparents in Greensboro and going to a Saturday matinee for a dime, nickle for popcorn, etc. in the mid 50's. darn I'm old and yesterday was my birthday. Gonna have a shot of Geritol and hit the hay.

Well, I guess I was poor (hell, I knew I was poor) I had a 57 Chevy, 2 door, 283 with a power glide and add on AC from Sears. I paid $300.00 cash for it in North Little Rock Arkansas. I jury rigged the reverb (given to me by a friend) and added some junkyard speakers in the back, took off the front bumper 'cause it looked cool. I recall many a Sunday replacing the front wheel bearings, it usually went through them in about a month and the front brakes might last 2 months. You guys remember scrounging around the junkyard for parts????? Then trying to deal with the guy at the front (the one with no teeth) about price???? I spent a lot of time at Krebs Salvage over in College Station.
A fond memory of getting my "first" in the back seat...... Kathy, ahhhhhh the memories of youth........

First car in 1962 was a '55 Dodge..coronet..2 dr hardtop..small V8 with auto lever shift on the dash..next to the ignition...used to "borrow" my mom's 1960 Dodge royal lancer..big boat of a car..Mopar 360 with huge carter AFB 4bbl. about 300 hp..it was fast for a big car......
