So many Canadian Geese!
OMG there are so many Canadian Geese around that they have become a real nuisance. There is pond by my house and it has 4 pair of nesting geese and their poop is everywhere. I was at a business today that has a very small pond in the front of their building, there was no way to avoid stepping on goose poop all over the sidewalk and the parking lot. There are hundreds at my marina and they crap all over boat swim platforms and all over the docks, the parking lot is full of goose crap too. They seem to like sitting on the hard top of my boat until I put one of those fake owls on my VHF antenna. Are Canadian Geese protected? Do they have any natural predators except maybe coyote's?
Are they a nuisance in other areas other than around the Great Lakes? |
We have a pond behind our house and it is filled with Canada geese. The adult geese are now molting and cannot fly, thus the problem with goose shit all over the place.
We cannot win.........we had a deer problem at our previous house and now have a goose shit problem at this house. ;-) |
Russ:
Those are "Canada geese", not "Canadian", just to get the terminology right. We refer to the Canada geese as "winged rats" around here. They are everywhere. I grew up near Cincinnati, never saw a Canada goose there until about 1980. Those buggers are plentiful there, now. The birds are migratory waterfowl, with open seasons, limits and hunting methods strictly controlled by Federal law. Don't even think about shooting or otherwise harming one out of season. My buddy and I have our Canada goose hunting trip scheduled for this fall. Every year, we go up to Canada and each of us shoots anywhere between 20 and 40 of those geese in 5 days. We do our best to help you out! :) |
yooz guys shoot about 20 for me, freeze them and send them on. good table fare.

Try black plastic stapled to a stake. This mimics crows and geese don't like them.

Canadian Geese = Cryptosporidium. Last thing you want in your swimming pool. Their crap contains Crypto. If they crap in your pool you can only kill 99.9% of it. They crap on your lawn and someone tracks it onto your pool deck and then into your pool you got it in your pool.
I think the Canadian who invented Poutine got the idea from the effects of Crypto on your digestive system because Poutine looks just like what comes out of you when you catch it. Maybe we oughta call em Brockville Geese ? ;? . |
For the most part the problem Geese are non migratory geese. Certain flocks have lost their will and need to migrate and become resident populations. So not prone to predation or stresses of their ancestors. Many of these have actually been purposefully released to increase populations that are off the main flyways and to replace migratory birds that are short stopping and not coming on down as far as they once would. By well meaning wildlife managers. They need to let the states have a bit more control over the hunting seasons and limits of these populations. However, a lot of these resident populations do not dine of the kinds of food that makes them delicious and many areas they are not fit to eat. Shame really. They can be superb table fare if they are feeding on the right stuff.

Put up some strings of the old time gas station pennants.
Ask your favorite beer salesman if he has any free ones. Just off the ground high enough to flutter. Ducks will ignore and go under, the geese will not and go some where else. |
I distort their nests and shoot them, enough is enough.

They linked Avian flu to a few, I believe in WI. That starts being wide spread, maybe we can start thinning the flock.

I've found none of them can stand up to a properly placed load of steel T shot.
Steel shot my ass.... at least you should be able to brag to your new Federal prison boy friend that you were a bad ass and used lead shot! Pussy! |

We have a small lake/pond at the back corner of our lot - where the dam is.
There are usually close to 50 around that end of the lake at any given time. :o The dam is maintained by the county and they usually let the grass get 12-18in. high to keep the geese (and the POOPING!) off the top area of the dam. Kids fish off there a lot in the summer, so it helps THEM keep the poop off their feet, too. In 4 years here, the geese have only walked over to our yard 1-2 times (about 50-75ft. away). Once when I saw them, I just yelled and clapped my hands and they "quacked" a few times and headed back over to the dam. My "plan" is: 1st time - yell! 2nd time - maybe a shot with a LOW-powered BB gun 3rd time - hold up a bottle of BARBECUE SAUCE and wave it at them! Regards, |

If I want to use lead on geese, I have a .22 magnum rifle. .30-06 works, too, but messy. ;)
Just aim for the head. Save the meat! :) |

I've heard swans will keep Canadian geese away.
