Default Flying a Flag

I normally fly an American flag but was wondering how people view flying old flags? Specifically the "don't tread on me flag"? Is it unpatriotic?

I have often wondered this myself, I think the problem comes with flying both. Nothing higher than Old Glory is what my Dad told me.....I just always went by that.

Virginia has a "Don't tread on me" license plate, can't be that unpatriotic.

Especially when you're flying a flag that was associated with our own nation.

If you were flying a vintage Russian flag, etc...different story.

That flag , as you call it the "dont tread on me" flag is the Gadsen Flag, and may be one of the MOST patriotic of flags, though id be willing to bet most who fly it have little to no understanding of its origin and meaning. It was the first Navy Jack.

Fly any flag you like, pirate, Gadsen, etc. BUT as above these must be alone or lower that US flag. I frequently fly the Bonnie Blue and I think it is historic and patriotic.

The Gadsen is seen by some as anti American and nothing could be farther from the truth. The stars and Bars are seen by some as racist, that too is hogwash.Personally,I fly the American flag,a Gadsen and a POW/MIA flag in my yard every day.

OP, I too consider the Gadsen flag as one of if not the most patriotic flags next to old glory. Now if I may, please educate yourself as to why my above statement as well as others here regarding this flag is true so that when someone asks you about it, you'll know.

By all means, fly them both proudly if you love your country as much as most here do, and don't give a rats ass what others think! Educate them as well.

FLAG ETIQUETTE is a lost concept

OLD GLORY should be the highest flag in the scheme of things EXCEPT in TEXAS where THE LONE STAR may legally fly at the same height, due to conditions of statehood since TEXAS is the only sovereign nation to be admitted as a state of the US

when moving/looking(as on a vessel/vehicle or @ a gate, house, building) forward OLD GLORY should be on your right and any other to the left

in clusters of flags, OLD GLORY should be in the middle & higher that others

i may be corrected butt at this time believe this to be correct, as far as it goes

The National Ensign should be placed in the position of honor on a vessel which is the aftermost staff. You can fly other flags higher but not on the same staff or same position of honor. We fly a larger US flag on the aft staff and a small courtesy Bahamas flag on the mast which is higher and well forward of the stern flag.

The U.S. Power Squadron has a web page on this. www.usps.org

When not under way the national ensign is flown from a flagstaff at the stern.
Under Way. The ensign is displayed from the gaff.

Gadsen Flag has taken on a symbolic role for a certain government party - some people now can't see past that and automatically assume you are a part of that party if you display the flag.

Its the only flag or sticker on my truck - and it has nothing to do with a political party.

The Gadsden Flag (Don't Tread On Me) is an historical American flag, flying it would be like flying the original version of Old Glory with 13 stars. Hard to imagine how it could be seen as un-American since it was the flag of the continental marines during the Revolution and actually predates the American flag as an American flag.

Yep....

You can thank Glen " cry me a river " Beck for that affiliation.

I could be totally off base but I have always considered the Gadsen (didn't even know it was called that) to be a symbol of the US Marines and would reserve the right to fly it to marines members or vets. It's a cool flag though.

Nemo me impune lacesset

If we are talking flags on vessels ... Old Glory is always flying on my boat --- 24/7 ... and I rotate the Gadsen and a Florida flag beneath ....
