Default diff $ for plane tickets on two diff computers

ok

so in looking at airline prices for a trip to RI in July, the SAME USAIR website was showing my GF and I different prices at the same time!?

What kind of game are they playing? Only difference I can think is I have looked up these tickets a couple different times now and maybe because of my cookies they think i must be willing to pay a little more??

You hit the nail on the head. Clear your cookies and from now on search with your browser in private mode, ctrl-shift-p in FireFox.

You using an Apple product? If so, they may figure you will pay whatever for the ticket!

The business technique used that results in those differences is called "price optimization". For some reason, the airline's computer mathemetical models suggest that the owner of one of those computers is more apt to just accept the rate without shopping around some more. The other owner is more likely, hence the lower initial price.

A friend of mine flies a couple of times a year. She gets a price online, goes back maybe the next day, and the price is always higher. Good tip on removing cookies.

Yeah, I found out that it is much cheaper to book through a travel agency again.

I am about to book 10 tickets to Italy ... Very interested in this thread ...

I usually search via Kayak then go direct to airline to book .... but this cookie issue is interesting

I travel quite frequently and yes, clear your cookies. Otherwise all prices start to look the same.

I buy airline tickets frequently. I do just what you do, search on a travel site, then buy from the airline site.

The travel sites are okay until you need to make a change or a flight gets delayed or canceled. I have had major customer service issues with the big travel sites. If you buy from the airline the customer service you get from the airline(not saying it is good) blows away the CS you will get from the travel site.

I saw on the news a while back that sometimes its also cheaper to book from a cell phone or tablet too. Worth a shot.

Check out Google flights. Occasionally I have problems buying the ticket by clicking the link on google flights but normally a quick browser reset fixes that.

A side note:
If buying direct from a non-U.S. airline, flight *may* be billed outside of the U..S., triggering the credit card dreaded foreign transaction fee, 3-ish percent. Not a deal-breaker, but still 3 percent.

Happened to me with Air Lingus, last year.

it is very frustrating. wonder if calling airline does anything?

The higher prices keep showing up even w cookies erased- for me. GF was 90 miles away when she checked. Someone came in her office and the USair booking timed out. When she went back the prices were higher!!

f&%ckers. Hate being played

price optimization as someone mentioned. some companies will charge a white women more $$ for a pack of pens then a black male. There was a study done on this. Interesting

company studied was staples

My boss was bitching about the last ticket I bought to Chicago. Was blaming me for the high fare. Like I have any control over what the airlines charge for tickets.

Airline prices change every minute. I can have 5 people call from random phones and I'll get 5 different ticket prices (good for a while so pick the best confirmation number and repeat the process again every day until you hit the low price). It has very little to do with cookies and more to do with volume, availability, timing, and fuel prices (which also change constantly). Typically, the very early morning Thursday 7 weeks prior to your flight will have the lowest fares, unless it's a holiday, or fuel does something weird. Computer brand doesn't matter.

Airline pricing analytics are very powerful. Each airline has teams of folks working on their pricing. They vary their pricing based on search traffic so a heavily searched flight will all of the sudden be higher priced based on perceived demand. This is by no means the determining factor but one of many.

Tuesday 2 p.m. best time to search and yes, pricing is dynamic based on many factors.
