Default America is not the greatest country in the world - But it could be again

I would certainly like to believe that it is, and the video link is from HBO but check it out and watch it all the way through before blasting me based on the title. Just seeing what others think about it.

Not sure where this will go but I would like to keep this out of the Bilge and up for discussion.

If America wanted to be great again, it would bring back honest money and allow truer forms of capitalism to thrive. Simple. As. That.

Good speech, I watched the series of the Newsroom. Season one wasn't bad but the second and final season sucked.

To your post we can definitely be the best again, but we need to start thinking as U.S. And not me all the time. Stop acting solely in self interest and start acting with personal and group responsibility.

Can't be "Great" and "PC" at the same time... Sorry but even with the best intentions we are all headed towards to lowest common denominator.

Curious what you mean by "honest money?"

Quoting a tv show that is already finished running. Loved the show, but this has been beat to death on here.

Money that can not be created out of thin air...be it backed by gold or simple law (that law must be followed, though, which it never has for extended periods of time in history).

This is the question. For everyone who has shared this video since The Newsroom first aired, no one has addressed this. If you're going to say America isn't the greatest country well then some other country is, name it. America certainly could be a hell of a lot better, whatever "better" is, but America is still far better off than the rest of the contenders.

X2. The things people take for granted...don't know what you have until it's gone. I love to travel, but I always come home.

I do want to clarify a few things since I am the OP:

1. I think that the US is the greatest country.

2. I apologize if this a been beaten to death. Today was the first time I had seen this clip since I have not had HBO in years.

Funny, I was going to ask what he meant by "truer forms of capitalism".

I asked the same thing just before the last couple of elections when some posters were claiming they were going to move out of the country if a certain person were to be elected. Never got an answer that I recall. I wonder if any of those guys ever made the move?

Where the market is not controlled by the gov't/banking complex...or the corporations.

Rates are currently manipulated by the gov't. The banks are allowed to emit credit not based on anything, yet it spends just as money. Big corporations have the government's ear on many things that affect us daily...

I could get more detailed, but I'm sure most here are not all that interested.

It was addressed in "The Rise of the Rest". The idea is that we were first in everything - the tallest buildings, the richest people, the best technology, etc.

But now the tallest building is in Dubai.
The world's richest man is Mexican.
The largest publicly traded company is Chinese.
The biggest plane is built in Russia.
The biggest refinery is in India.

Then there's the distinctly American things, like the largest Ferris wheel in Singapore, the largest casino in Macao, the biggest movie industry in Bollywood, or 9 of the 10 largest shopping malls being outside the US with the biggest in Dongguan, China.

Thirty years ago, were were tops for most of the items I listed. Now we are tops in none of them, hence the rise of the rest. Just because we stumbled doesn't mean that one clear winner emerged.

Let's say Johnny used to be the best student in the class. He got A's in every subject, had perfect attendance, and played varsity sports. Everyone agreed he was the best student.
Then something happened and he fell from grace, started drinking, got kicked out of sports programs, and was failing his classes. He's not the best student anymore, but some cannot agree, since no one told us who is now taking his place as the best student.
Suzie excels at History, but sucks in Math.
Joe's great in Math, but has poor reading comprehension.
Mark is a jock, but has a room temperature IQ.

So who's the best student? He isn't number 1 at anything anymore, but without any one person being #1 at everything, who is now the best?
