Default Where people live longest- the Blue Zones

Heard an interesting story on NPR last weekend, an interview with Dan Bluettner, a Fellow of the National Geographic Society. He is involved in a project to find the parts of the world where people live longest (calling them the "Blue Zones") and try to understand what's different there. People living in the Blue Zones are 10X as likely to reach age 100 as the average human.

Some interesting take-aways for me.
1. The place where women live longest is not the same place where men live longest. It's not even on the same continent.
2. All the Blue Zones are coastal areas or islands. Maybe there's something about being near saltwater.
3. Not only did Blue Zone inhabitants live longest, but they spent the least time ill or incapacitated at the end of their lives. So, they didn't just live longer, they lived active lives much longer.
4. There are 5 identified Blue Zones. I was surprised to see one is in California- Loma Linda. Who'd a thunk?
5. Other threads on this board talk about the dangers of refined sugars (a type of carbohydrate) in the diet. One thing common to the Blue Zones is diets high in carbohydrates. So, choose your carbohydrates thoughtfully.
6. Another common diet finding was that the Blue Zone diet got a large fraction of its protein from beans. By golly, they ARE good for your heart! The web site has a recipe for Sardinian Minestrone, a 3-bean soup.

What about the cost of living? I'll say the USA for example, everywhere near the salt is more expensive. Its a fact. Especially the more tropic it is. These people can afford nutrition. While poor people are stuck farther inland. These people can't afford nutrition.
