Default Carolina BBQ... Again

Man, I found the holy grail yesterday when I stopped at The Pit in Raleigh on the way back from the OBX. Bought three pounds to take home, but I should have bought more.

Their Brunswick Stew was more like Brunswick Soup (as were the other places I tried), and believe it or not, Smithfield's had the best. Luckily for me it was on sale, so I bought four pints of that too. I figure I'll start a new weight loss thread around Monday.

It is health food because you are happy when you are eating it and happy people live longer.

I like the way you think.

I knew I should have bought 20 lbs.

Maybe a little off your trail back from OBX if you do not do the ferry route

Yeah, we came back across 64. Had some Smithfield BBQ in Morehead City since it was right across from where we were staying, and it was pretty dang good too. The stuff I brought back from The Pit was $13 per pound.

The pit is good for sure. Their family style dining is freaking awesome, and well worth the price.

The best eastern NC BBQ I've found to date has been at the Skylight Inn. Freaking incredible! Wilber's comes in a veeeeeeeery close...not even 2nd...maybe like 1.1.

Also I am always impressed with Smithfield's. Even though it's a chain, they are doing it RIGHT!

Why heck! If you were in MHC heading home take 70 to 17 and it's on the way. You will not be disappointed.

PS. Load up on El's shrimp burgers while in MHC.

The Pit has family style dining as in all you can eat? Didn't see that if they did, but I must admit their portions were pretty skimpy on the chopped pork platter.

I tried Wilber's on the way down, and while it was good, it wasn't great. Kind of dry and a tad tough. Buddy of mine who eats there a lot says he's had some so-so cue there too. Maybe just a bad batch. They had the family style, all you can eat deal there, but it required four people at the table ordering the same thing. I told our waitress to find us a table of four who wanted some company, but when I told her I just wanted barbecue, she hooked me up with extra.

Would love to try Skylight as I haven't been to Ayden since I was a kid. Would like to drive by and see my grandfather's old church where I remember riding my tricycle around the sidewalk. Maybe I'll mail order some from them when I run out of barbecue tomorrow.

Now you tell me!

We came into MC then took the ferry to the OBX and stayed in Kill Devil Hills until we came home yesterday. Maybe next time.

Kings in Kinston(next to Neuse Sports). Ain't bad neither. Lock the car doors though. Kingston has fallen on hard times.

Freeebird: the pit does indeed offer family style (4+ folks I think). Last time we went, we got I think 2 apps, 2 sides, 3 meats, drinks and nanner puddin (all unlimited) and it worked out to I think ~$22 a head. Would have been around $20 but we got ribs which is a slight up charge. Cheapest way to eat at the pit IMHO if you want to go all out...

Unfortunately wake county put a stop to their "smoke n coke"...house-smoked bourbon (or JD....can't remember), and of course coke. Freaking amazing.
