Default Seagate External HD... Trashed?

I've used this thing exactly twice, and upon hooking it up this morning, it does nothing but flash at me. Looked at Seagate's website, and it basically sounds like it's trashed as their troubleshooting procedure did nothing to correct the problem. Of course it's out of warranty.

How many friggin backups does a man need to keep his crap from drifting into cyberspace? Now I get to figure out how to retrieve the information from this Chinese POS to something else. Good thing I had that vacation these last few days.

Open the case up and pull the drive out. Hook it directly up your computer sata and power port. It will at least tell you if its the drive or just the usb interface.

Talked to their customer service dept. and they are emailing a tutorial about how to do that. This thing will be three years old in November, and apparently they're not supposed to last much longer than that, even setting on a shelf.

I'm thinking online storage is the way to go, especially if these things are going to take a dump every 2-3 years. Then again, maybe I'll just go back to the old fashioned way of printing photos and storing them in an album. God only knows what it will take to retrieve the photos I have on this thing already.

Gee, that was exciting. They sent me a YouTube video of some guy opening a case that's not even the same as mine. Hey, at least it crashed BEFORE I stored all my new vacation photos on it. I have a feeling I'm gonna need another vacation before this is all said and done.

What model is it? It should be self explanatory. They usually hide screws underneath the rubber feet on the bottom.

I got it out of the case, but I'm not sure what to do next. Hooked it back to power but can't hear/feel anything.

I bought one after my Mac hard drive crashed. Now I have to worry about that dying too? Anyone know of one that lasts?

I went to that site and was reading the instructions, but when I entered my personal information, they redirected me to Best Buy and promised a $50 gift certificate if I never log onto their site again.
