Default How can we turn those 100-200 Guest's into Members?

Well, everytime I head to the homepage, I always notice that usually half of the people viewing the site are guests, and not members. Well, how can we change that? How can we turn those "passing-through" viewers into members of THT? I dont think 40000+ members is enough. Im deffinitly thinking 100000+ is much better...I just hope wiley has a server big enough...

I am sure some of those guests are some members alter egos....as for inspiring guests to take the next step and register ;?

These guests are already benefiting from free info in the forums, I don't want to step on Wiley's toes here but maybe there should be a limit on how many times a guest may view the forum..........and then after the 5th or 10th time, registration is required...

Many forums make you register before viewing the individual threads. You can only see the individual topics, and when you click on them, you are prompted to register. It works. I have done it several times to get the info I need.

This has been discussed many times in the past. The boss has consistently maintained the opinion that guests are very welcome here. I like em too.

I think you should be allowed to post for a while and then have to buy a wheel to continue. Say @ 250 posts. Then again @ 500, and 1000. After that you could contribute at will. If I would have had to pay to start posting initially, my cheap @ss would have never gotten addicted to this place. Now that Wiley and the rest of you freaks have turned me into a fast typing junkie though, I would probably start pawning sh!t just to feed the monster.

Then you should have two wheels...not one...

I hear what your saying. I buy a wheel for every 750 posts.

I have noticed that many new registrants shortly add CC membership so they can post ads in The Trading Dock section and/or post their photographs. And besides all the Boat-People, there are those who are thinking of becoming Boat-People__ as another example, I am not even a Boat-Person, but I am hooked on THT anyway, obviously. I am confident that most visitors will recognize and appreciate that primary value of THT--that it is a great free source of unslanted information--and get as hopelessly hooked as we are, and decide on their own that THT merits their support. Still, even without CC membership, they can make valuable contribution to THT by participating, sharing their own experience and information.

come on now squid, you're a college kid, you should know exactly what to do for a member drive. Do it just like the various organizations on campus do when they want to recruit new people, all it takes is the magic world being said.

FREE PIZZA & BEER.

A while back, just before the last membership drive, W-Man encouragged the Captains to cajole long-time members into buying a wheel. Then he sort of called off the dogs after there were a lot of whiny posts but membership had jumped quite a bit. He recently opined that he may desire a resumption of encouragement when he gets ready to buy the next server.

In the mean-time we should all remain civil to all members, including those who are free-loading.

Would be nice to raise the member count. I amost want to post some of my boat questions in the Captains forum. Seems like a better alliance of getting responses. The boat general forum posts so many, it moves to fast from lurkers.

Eventually I'll have me one of those fancy anchors. But right now I'm dealing with a pregnant wife that throws a rock at me, I mean a big one ,if I spend money on anything that ain't baby related. You'll figure that out sooner or later.

If you do the "Magic number" thing, many non-Captain's will just re-register with a new name.

Too bad we cant tell them about all the secret stuff we do in the "Captains Forum."

Honestly, If you think about it, what does a member gain by paying? You get acess to the "Captains Forum" which is hardly used for discussions, the "Sandbar", which isnt helpful boating information, and you can post for-sale ads. If only there was a way to add benefits to becomming a member, more people would join. I mainly joined, and keep joining, is to support THT, not to post in the Snadbar or CF, and Ive yet to post a for-sale ad.

Bottom Line - it is the right thing to do by registering. If you benefit somehow by using the forum a little payback is the way to go. Would you constantly ask your mechanic questions without a tip or even them charging you, I don't think so. The quality and variety of information here is unmatched. If you are just browsing then fine, but if the info is used and is helpful join in!
