Default Laptop Help... System Feezes during scan???

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that I use for traveling as well as wireless internet around the house. It is a 550 MHz with 256 MB/Mem - recently it got what I thought was a virus so I wiped it, repartitioned to one big "C" drive with NTFS. It is presently loaded with XP Pro (SP2 with updates), Norton and MS Antispyware which are all current also.

Here's the deal. I can boot up and run fine. I have run a Spyware scan with no problem, but when I try to run a NORTON scan it will undoubtedly lock up within about 5 minutes at no particuilar point. When I say lock up, I mean the system is frozen and unresponsive and a hard shutdown/reset is required.

I have not run a defrag or chkdsk yet (shouldn't need to with a fresh partition and load) and the system should be 100% clean and virus free with a complete rebuild of the disk structure and nothing shows up in the system logs.

My thought is that I may have a hard drive going out.

So, what do you all think? ;?

At this point, I am considering just dumping it and picking up a post X-Mas used one that is loaded and newer)

which is loaded first?.... Spyware or Norton..... You probably getting conflict with Norton and Spyware software... Why do you need Spyware if you have Norton?

try running the virus scan in safe mode. I would think if it runs fine then you know it is software related, if it still hangs then it very well may be hardware.

Ok I removed the antispyware and initiated a "quickscan" in Norton.. Without even getting to the first file it's locked up..

Hard reboot..

Booted back up no problem and tried scanning again - got 280 files into it (nothing really) and locked up - pretty typical for it to get around 300 files and lock up..

Other than the HDD being bad, I am suspecting maybe a master boot virus loaded itslef a long time ago and norton has never picked it up???

Now I have no idea of what you have installed on this laptop Woody, but could you not load it up with tasks much like a deep scan would? It "should" freeze up if it were to be sufficiently loaded I would think.

IMHO Norton products are a major source of a lot of computer problems. Since I've come to realize this and dumped any and all Norton products from my computer my life has become big time easier. My current day feelings are you couldn't give me the latest and greatest Norton products - it's just not worth the headaches!

Try booting up your system in Safe Mode and running the scan - what happens then?

Have you tried running Ad-Aware? You could have a trojan or something that is causing the freeze up - it causes the freeze up because the worm doesn't want to be cleaned up and burnt.

Dump the Norton product for the time being and go to download.com and install Trend Micro's anti virus or maybe AVG's anti virus and run them to see what happens.

Chris,
I second the opinion of dumping Norton. I now use PC_Cillin on my laptop and ezTrust EZ Antivirus on my desktop and I like both better than Norton. You should keep MS Anti-Spyware also. There are alot of computers that have freezes with SP2 and it is almost always software related. Usually it is a driver that needs to be updated but it sounds like yours might be a Norton problem. To be safe, make sure all of your drivers are current, especially the video drivers.

Also avast make a antivirus that I have been more than pleased with. It allows you to perform a boot-time scan that will not let windows get in the way. It is the only one that I have fould that killed (completely) the beagle virus. www.avast.com. it is free for home use. Just posted this on another thread too. I dont work for them BTW.

Why are you going back to Symatec/ Norton? Try Trend Micro/ PC - Cillin or AVG's, anybody buddy elses but not Symatec/Norton.

I switched over to McAfee (sp?) corporate release about a year ago on all my computers & have had much better performance since the switch.

One thing that I have figured out with XP pro that makes it actually work correctly is when you install the OS to imediately install the service packs (and all other updates) before you install any other software at all, I've seen several instances where the service packs did more harm than good when installed as an upgrade after the computer was established & loaded up with software. I've done this on the past 9 or 10 computers I've done and haven't had too much trouble of of them at all.

I haven't called them (Symantec), but I am increasingly doubtful that Norton is the actual problem. I run Symantec products on all my stuff at home as well as loaded on all of the networks and workstations at work...

Autobahn, you are dead on there about loading up all the patches/updates immediately. I did just that..

Garett, I hear ya but the issue isn't Norton necessarily and that is the key.. The issue is isolating where the problem is and I am thinking Norton just happens to be the one that trips over it.. Ya know?

I'm running a chkdsk now and then a defrag and we'll see what that pops up....

As I figured, Nothing.. 0 Bad Sectors..

Well, it's gotta be either a virus on the Master Boot Record, which is transparent to all but the most intense A/V software --- or I have a RAM/hardware issue..

I just downloaded AVAST and trying it out now.. It's doing the initial boot scan right now.. fingers crossed!

Any other suggestions?

What kind of HD is it, SATA, SCSI? Might be a bad controller...
