Default I shot, bambi walked

I’m not an avid deer hunter- I get out two or three times a year and stalk through the woods for half a day, but that’s it. I got a reprieve from school today so I went deer hunting. I got a late start. 20 minutes after shootin’ light I was plodding through a clear-cut on my way to a pile of tree tops the cutters left behind. The trees overlooked a stream where I had scared up a bedded buck during dove season. I figured it was pretty pointless, but I snuggled into the treetops and started watching the stream. Then I realized I forgot my binoculars. The stream was 175 yards away and my vision isn’t the best, so things were really looking up for the deer.

A flock of several hundred robins had flown into the clearcut and several were in my little wood pile, so I contented myself watching and listening to them. Despite my orange hat, several flew right at me only to veer away at the last second, so close I could feel the wind from their wings. I looked toward the stream and a buck was looking back.

It was in the open, a couple of yards out from the treeline. I couldn’t believe it. I raised my rifle, snuggled into the stock and settled the crosshairs on the buck’s shoulder. I squeezed the trigger till the gun went off, and I found the deer again through the scope. It slowly walked forward, turned to it’s left and walked into the trees. I started shaking.

I was sure I’d hit the deer so I set my stopwatch for 20 minutes. I wouldn’t start looking till then so the deer wouldn’t run. About 5 minutes later I saw an orange hat where my deer had been. I walked down to talk to him, and we looked for about an hour but never found so much as a single drop of blood, let alone a whole deer.

I felt sicker and sicker as I looked and looked. I walked grids, I checked all the down trees- nothing. It seems I made a clean miss.

I used to shoot rifles and pistols a lot, and I thought I was a pretty good shot. I don’t shoot nearly as much these days, but I thought I was still a good shot. So now I’m eating a heaping helping of humble pie. It’s not nearly as tasty as venison.

Did you check your scope? If it was that clean of a shot, and you think you hit it, you probably did, look some more. I did the same thing a few years ago, searched a few hours, got discusted and stopped looking. On my way out, a good 80 yrds from where I searched I found a slight blood trail. 20 yrds from there it looked like O.J. had been there every 10 ft. At the end was a 8 pt with a 19" spread, my biggest till then. The slug had just clipped the very tip of his heart. The deer was no where near it was "supposed " to be, Maybe yours is farther away also.

Several years back I was out hunting for deer with my trusty 12 ga. Most of the walking I did was in heavy brush. I picked up a trail and fallowed it. The deer had been staying in a clearing for a while. Then it would leave. The trail it had worn in the woods looked like rail road tracks. Well Every day for 3 days I would find the deer's trail and most of the time it was a fresh trail and every day the deer would wind up in the clearing. On the third day I got a jump start on it and went into the edge of the clearing way before dawn trying to head off the deer. Well the sun started to come up and so didn't another problem. A ground fog came up. It hovered about 3 feet off the ground. I had been sitting in one spot so long my legs started to cramp. So I stood up and took a couple of steps away from my gun. Well when I turned around to go back. There stood a deer a BIG buck. The fog was just hovering over its shoulder. Every time I would take a step it would stick its head up out of the fog. Finally I got back to my gun. I sat down again and lined up for the shot. Then it struck me. No slugs ! Only OO buck shot. The deer was a long way off. I figured what the hell. I took the shot. Pumped another round into the chamber and lined up for another shot. Just as I was putting the mark on it the buck jumped a mile high. Run I've never seen anything run so hard. It made 2 passes around the clearing the disappeared into the woods. I waited a while and then went looking for it. I found the deer about 200 yards into the woods. After I field dressed the deer I went back to were I was sitting and walked out into the field to were the deer was. The shot was close to 90 yards. When I skinned the deer there was no wasted meat. I only hit the deer with 3 pellets. One in the throat, one in the leg and the killer went into the lung. That dear was an 8 pointer and field dressed was 175 pounds.

nanjemoycat, yeah I went to a power line and fired a couple of shots at a paper target- the scope is still on. I searched all around where I saw it last. It's public land (the Lee Game lands) and there are a lot of hunters there, so I'm reluctant to wander too far- I don't want to ruin the other hunter's spots.

In retrospect I think I flinched when I shot. chip.

Aint that a drag on both accounts. One you don't know if you even shot it and not getting some fresh meat.
