NBC's The Slap?

Are you going to watch this mini series? What is your take on it, in other words which side of the fence are you going to fall on?

Plot Summary:
At a barbecue in suburban Melbourne, a man slaps a three-year-old boy across the face. The child, Hugo, has been misbehaving without any intervention by his parents, "the steely-eyed Rosie and the wimpish Gary".[1] The slapper is Harry, cousin of the barbecue host and adulterous businessman whose slightly older son, Rocco, is being threatened by Hugo. This event sends the other characters "into a spiral, agonising and arguing over the notion that striking a child can ever be justified. Some believe a naughty boy should be taught some discipline, others maintain the police ought to be brought in to investigate a common assault"[1] with a range of positions in between.

Personally, if the little brat came after me and my child with a baseball bat (as in the previews) you're damn skippy he would get an attention getter.

I do not think I am going to devote my time to this 5 week mini series though. Just a little too touchy feely you need a participation trophy kind of show for me.

The majority in today's nanny state would argue that the adult slapping the kid should be sent to prison for a very lont time, if not in fact executed.

SEATOAD 02-09-2015 09:50 AM

I got spanked with a belt, a switch, a hairbrush, a yardstick, etc you name it. I also think my earlobes are probably half an inch lower due to being dragged around by them all the time. I also got whacked on the back of the head a lot.

However, all that was in the 80s when it was still acceptable to discipline kids using some degree of force. I think those days are largely over now. Any little brat's parents can say the kid has "behavioral" issues and blah blah blah which magically absolves them or the kid of any amount of personal responsibility.

Its a pack of crap.

.

I was smarting off in English class as a freshman in HS and a franciscan brother came up from behind and gutted me. I bet I was on the floor a good five minutes. Only thing worse was gettin an invitation to the boxing ring with Brother Francis.:Q

The wooden spoon was my mom's favorite.

I was a really rotten kid and deserved most of it.

One of the times I didn't deserve it was when I was 12 or 13 or so and this kid's older brother (abt 18) came up and accused me of beating up his younger brother. I never had even seen his younger brother - but I got the crup beaten out of me even so. Broken nose, teeth out, etc. Found out who he was and that his Dad was a NYC detective who ended up with 4 flat tires.;?

I never minded whacking somebody who pizzed me off.

I have seen this situation play out at a marina BBQ. There are no winners and the slap-er has a permanent mark on his record for protecting several children from injury.

Ultimately the kid deserves the slap (not across the face) but not from anyone except his parents.

Adults should know better.

The person being slapped should have been the parent(s) of the misbehaving child who did not intervene and parent their child. Somebody slaps my child and they will be receiving a hell of a lot worse from me.

Not shocked at all this comes from NBC.

This is seriously going to be a TV show?

No thanks, I need to arrange my canned goods by sell-by date.

I spanked my 28 year old once that I can remember. My 8 yr old I don't think I have spanked at all as of yet. Not against spanking I just find other means of discipline more effective.

I've been whacked by all sorts of objects by parents, siblings and teachers. Not once has anyone ever slapped me across the face for my infractions. That said, you touch my kid and I'm breaking your nose.

Avid 24 02-09-2015 12:43 PM

I've seen the previews on this show. Interesting. Personally my Mom was a fan of the "everyone needs a swift kick in the ass" school and I deserved it and am better for it.

I don't discipline my kids physically, but I am firm with them as needed and my kids are extremely well behaved so far.

And as much as I would like to at times, I would never discipline someone else's child. I might suggest to the parent that they consider it though :).

riverpirate84 02-09-2015 12:50 PM

I got my azz beat on a regular basis and deserved every lick. I can't count the number of hickory switches that were cut in my honor. I am a better person for it. Slapping the kid across the face was definitely uncalled for but someone should've turned the little bastard over their knee and dusted his britches.

For a variety of reasons the USA, and many other countries have become completely devoid of discipline, responsibility, manners, and respect. One of the reasons that is true can be directly attributed to the lack of spanking most all children stopped getting in the late 70's early 80's. Due to liberals marketing discipline as child abuse, and boy did that work. Most ALL of you under 40 think that spanking is child abuse, when just the opposite is true. Lack of discipline and spanking does way more harm, and fosters the attitudes that we see more and more in society today.

Spanking with love, is NOT child abuse.

There is a big difference between spanking and face slapping. And a 3 year old.slapped in the face ...Sick. Break the chain boys...

x2 Good grief what a sicko premise for entertainment. We are entertaining ourselves to our death.

I hate to spoil it but I must, Brian Williams steps in and saves the bat wielding boy from the beating that he was about to receive. The beater then whips out an RPG and shoots Brian Williams in the face......unfettered by the fact that his brains have been blown out Brian WIlliams continues to deliver the same nightly drivel that he has skewed for the past umpteen years....The sheeple did not notice....and somewhere along the way his (Brian WIlliams)daughter swung threw and gave out copious amounts of analingus to all parties involved....

A child can be disciplined without spanking. I was tough on my two girls, when I told them I was going to ... I did it, every time. My kids turned out to be two fine upstanding adults that respect themselves as well as others. They have a good work ethic and are fine family oriented people, and they became that without spanking.

Now, if anyone else was to lay a hand on one of my kids, be it a neighbor or a teacher or anyone, they would soon learn why I had to attend a year and a half of anger management. My kids were and are my life, if you laid your hands on one of them you would have been answering to me in no short order.

That being said, I have no interest in watching this.

danielw 02-09-2015 02:00 PM
